Drunk drivers will face the full might of the law and could land up behind bars, Transport Acting Minister Dikobe Benedict Martins said on Sunday.

"We are warning you: Your days are numbered and it won't be long before your misbehaviour catches up with you," he said in a statement.

I'm no hypocrite, and admit to having made a plethora of poor decisions in my young adulthood. Thankfully, I was able to recognize and reform my ridiculously irresponsible behaviour. Shuttles and cabs are both easily accessible and reasonably priced these days, and I'd rather pay a small price than a big price. I'm certain that many of us on these forums have lost friends or family (or know someone that has) at the hands of intoxicated drivers — or by driving while intoxicated. I recently watched this video which reminded me of how quickly a 'crazy night out' can turn bad.

Good. Some jail time will do the idiots good. If you want to get drunk and drive and kill/hurt yourself by all means go ahead, nobody cares, but you have no right no endanger other people.

I welcome this 100%. I do not want to share the road with anyone who is even remotely intoxicated. The sooner this sort of behaviour is eradicated the better. One drink is too many if you are getting behind the wheel. A lifetime full of regret can be spared by making sure someone will get you home safely.

Problem is, the lack of enforcing officers. It's easy to make threats but do they have the people and resources to catch the offenders?

Does this include or exclude ANC politicians and their friends?

Still if we can't police our current level of drunk driving what makes them think raising the bar will be any better.

Knowing very well that history repeats itself, we won't see any high ranking political officials of the ruling party get prosecuted for anything especially drunk and driving. It will probably get squashed by their PR department.

That I seriously doubt. That and the general incompetence of our police force.
