AVG irritating the cr@p out of me

Hey guys,

just wanting to roll this one past you maybe someone has come across this. This last week AVG 2013 (got the full internet suite) started giving me this.

avg error.png

This pops up every 10 - 15 minutes. I have googled it but to no avail as nobody can give a concrete answer to the problem. It looks like it detects the virus in windows files (in my mind new updates). I am currently running Windows 8.1.

Any ideas?

Switch off windows update completely and see if it still pops up. If yes then you've got a problem.

tbh it sounds like AVG fcked up their AV signatures...again...if true then they'll fix it their side.

Also do a full system scan...the 15 min cycle could also be the PC getting re-infected from a hidden source.

If you're paranoid then you can run some online AV scans:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
eset also has one but I've only used the trendmicro one.

AVG is crap. Really bad. Rather use MSE/Defender or something else that actually does the job...

Lolling aside... I haven't had a virus in a very long time so either mse/defender or just common sense.

After I ditched AVG for killing half of my files on my PC, I switched to Avast (silent/gaming mode), never get a notification ever again.

I agree with Necuno. Go with MSE/Defender and common sense. The advantage of Defender is that you don't even know about it yet if someone plugs in an infected USB stick then it catches it immediately.

lol'ing indeed. I'm using MSE anyway too despite knowing that its inferior. Then again...not running mission critical stuff so as you say common sense + MSE will do.

Though I can't help but comment on this:
>I haven't had a virus in a very long time
That could serve as proof of the AV being very good, or blind as a bat....

Yeah well, the only other thing I have on is MBAM :D

Try ESET. It's great, give the free trial a try. One of the least resource intensive AV out there.

In all honestly, I recommend ANYTHING other than AVG. It's a pathetic AV and slows down things to a crawl. A family member still uses that thing, and their PC is just filled with toolbars and AVG search engines, all that rubbish. Avoid AVG like the plague.

Malwarebytes is very good as well.

Common sense can trump all AV though. Just a tip, when you're playing "download roulette", hover over the millions of download bars 'till you find one that has a url similar to the site you're browsing.

I use Avast, and have been using it for years. It only had a false-positive once, but works great!

Erm I'm pretty sure it's not the AV that causes the slowness, it's the pc itself. I can almost bet a hundred bucks that the pc of your family member is full of dust inside, the HD is never defragmented, it's full of crap they downloaded, the registry is bloated/cluttered, loads of junk files, the hardware drivers are completely outdated and the hardware is old/slow.

You have a choice to install those things when installing the AV.

You have to use it in conjunction with an AV, not alone.

I haven't used AVG in years, and don't plan to anytime soon. It's their PC, not mine :D I honestly can't remember what hardware they were running, it was fine doing anything else expect when AVG scanned. It *seemed* to be a decent system, but I wasn't there to inspect their PC :p I make them run Ccleaner so I don't think anything should be overly filled with "junk".

There wasn't much going on in msconfig, I told them to untick the optional bloatware but they don't listen. [Just spam next, next, next 'till it's installed but hey, not my problem. You can't force people to listen so...] It just seemed fishy to be, that's all. I don't think a reputable AV needs all the bloatware. Hell, most of the AV's I've used have never asked to install any of that stuff.

Even back in the day when I did use AVG it was slow. Doesn't seems to have gotten any better. There are better alternatives on the market, especially if you're willing to play for a license.

Of course not.

Not even live scans or the current scan can do this. Its all a lie and that option to exclude folders, files and processes are all there for cosmetic reasons...

Thanks to everyone that replied to this post. I am now officially AVG-free!

I got a copy of Norton from work (Norton Internet Security 2013 with a license for a year) and installed that. I must say I am impressed, my system is "feeling" a bit smoother and the scanning and updating went flawlessly. I also cannot see an impact on gaming. Why I'm being so pedantic about having an antivirus is that my wife is a teacher and uses her memory stick and school software on my pc. I have had so many viruses that I picked up by just plugging the sticks in my PC that I must use some sort of protection.

Thanks for all your help and responses!
