Crystal Dynamics has detailed the numerous improvements players can expect to see in the upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, explaining that the new port is "a colossal effort, soaked in visual enhancements and technical optimizations."

The game will run at a native 1080p resolution on the PS4 and Xbox One, and will be bolstered by a "buttery framerate" throughout. The new port is bundled with all of the game's previously released multiplayer DLC, along with the bonus The Tomb of the Lost Adventurer add-on, six alternate outfits, and a collection of digital comic books and documentary featurettes.

Lara herself has also seen an upgrade for the upcoming port, as Crystal Dynamics has implemented a new head and face model for the game's misfortune-prone protagonist, along with subsurface scattering technology that results in more realistic skin glow.

While a handful of games released last year for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were available at a discounted rate for buyers who wished to upgrade to PS4 and Xbox One versions, Eidos notes that it will not offer a Definitive Edition discount for players who purchased a previous version of Tomb Raider on any platform. The company additionally revealed that Definitive Edition's upgrades are exclusive to current-gen consoles; an update for the Windows PC version of Tomb Raider is "not planned."

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will be priced at $59.99 when it launches in North America on January 28.

Define "buttery framerate"......

But I'm really glad console gamers will be able to play this game the same way PC gamers have been since it came out....

Well when I think of butter I think of a huge frozen brick of butter. So maybe its a chunky 1 FPS until it warms up :p

Agreed though, it will be nice to see console gamers up here, it's a nice view.

PC gamers are going to be peeved when they see this game in action. Watch carefully. This version is going to blow the PC version out of the water, and PC Elitists are going to be left with a "WTF" expression on their face. It's gonna happen!

Doubt it, the PC you need to fun everything at max is still way more powerful than a PS4, they can't do more than bring it up to PC level. All they are doing is taking the toys from PC, porting them to the console version and then redressing Lara in a new outfit to say look it's brand new. It's basically a PC port to console.

This.

TressFX was a huge frame killer and my PC isn't exactly low spec'ed :/ So for them to be running it buttery smooth (I'm guessing 60fps?) AND supposedly having everything PC has and more seems a bit far fetched doesn't it?

Have you guys bothered reading the article? The lighting is enhanced (not available in the PC version), some of the models are completely changed and enhanced (not available in the PC version). Based on comparison screenshot the new console definitive edition looks better than the PC version in a number of areas.

Sorry lads. Console > PC in this case. I know it's a tough pill to swallow, but, I'm sure Nvidia or AMD will release a R16,000 GPU that bring you out on top again soon.

No, in this case console is not better than PC. A game has been released on console with better features that the developer won't release on PC.

I would look at this if I were you, PC on top and the new one is below. TressX looks even better on PC than here, looks like more individual hairs on the PC version.

You can read as many articles as you want but what a publisher says isn't always true nor practical. That is unless you can look at the gameplay demo for aliens colonial marines and says that the same as what the delivered.

As is always true when it comes to comparing things, the debate is subjective at best. To me, the TressFX looks better on the bottom screenshot and more realistic. The PC version looks over-the-top. So let's also look at some other things: Lara's lips texture looks better on the bottom pic, The bow looks better to me as well, especially with the rags texture at the tip - it's much more defined. Lara's eyes look better and more realistic in the bottom pic, the lighting looks better in the bottom pic - and the rest of the stuff looks either exactly on par or better than the PC comparison.

Now, ladies and gentlemen - this is all done on a R6300 console. You will NOT run the game, looking like the top pic @ 1080P with a smooth 60fps framerate on a PC that costs R6300 or less.

Wait till it's released and you really can do screen by screen comparisons without dev touch up. Like I said remember Aliens, what they show isn't what they give.

From the comparison posted, the PS4 Def Ed definitely looks better - esp Lara. Its a specifically selected screencap for press release though so not sure how much evidence that provides. The fact that they chose to compare 2 Laras at different levels of health/blood is a little on the dubious side though imo. Still - she simply looks better on the Def Ed no matter how you spin it.

Not sure why they bothered to re-write TressFX though...the first TressFX 2.0 game will hit like a month after this...its even the publisher (Edios).

The mention
all textures "have been created at 4x resolution
seems to have disappeared from the latest round of press releases. Told you so...

There is zero chance of them pulling off this combo without it being some sneaky word-play (bolded):

>All texture resolutions have been created at 4x resolution
>Native 1080p gameplay
>TRESS FX technology

That being said, subsurface scattering is a solid addition. As is bundling all the DLCs into one convenient pack.

Agreed. Two minor hick-ups though...that R6300 price is heavily subsidized by increased game cost and secondly nobody said anything about 60fps - from what I see they are unwilling to commit either way so they are likely pushing for 60 but not quite there yet.

Still seems like a solid improvement & will benefit both console and PC long term I think. Bit annoyed by the hard upsell though (600+ bucks is a lot of money for zero new content) and reliance on sketchy wording of improvements.

It's not Lara at 2 different states, it's one pic from a users pc and then the devs pic. What makes it worse is at that stage of the game Lara is climbing out from a pool of blood and dead bodies which is why she is covered in blood. That means the dev pic is doctored to remove the blood, which means it can be further doctored if need be.

One day when [some of] the developers [and its audiences] has matured it might read

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition boasts awesome gameplay
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition boasts interesting story
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition boasts intricate characters
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition boasts < insert something great other than epeen or candy >

Why the heck is my brain telling me it's 60fps?? It's not in the article either. Sigh - maybe it's wishful thinking. This early in the year. That's not good.

We're arguing over which version gives Lara a better hairstyle, yet no one's talking about the included DLC, the story, or anything else that actually matters.

Trust the PC master race to literally split hairs.

Woah woah woah woah - you're coming in here, in 2014, and telling everyone that hairstyles are not important?
