With Simon Kinberg (X-Men/Sherlock holmes) at the writing helm and Greg Leads from Wizards of the Coast, this might become an epic worth getting excited for.

Myself not ever being a huge fan of the card game, I'd love to see those incredible characters be brought to life though!

Film studio 20th Century Fox has bought the movie rights to Wizards of the Coast's popular fantasy card game, with the intent of making it into a major movie franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter is...reporting that 20th Century Fox has bought the rights to make a series of movies based on Magic: The Gathering, which the studio hopes will be "a massive franchise on the scale of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings."

Wizards of the Coast president Greg Leeds and Hasbro's Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis will be executive producers on the project (Wizards of the Coast is a subsidiary of Hasbro). Film writer and producer Simon Kinberg is in charge of overseeing the series; Kinberg has worked as a writer and producer for Fox's X-Men films, and was a writer on Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Sherlock Holmes, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

There's no word on what kind of story a Magic: The Gathering movie might entail, or who might star in it, but if Ian McKellen doesn't show up as some kind of wizard I'm going to be sorely disappointed.

my guess is this is gonna be one of those thigns that never actually come to be like the wow movie i have been waiting for forever

This could be really cool! Could be... I loved the card game but could never afford to keep up with the deck releases. There are like 70+ books so there should be plenty stories for Hollywood to massacre.

I was going to say the movies would probably be based on the books... They seem to have a decent producer, hopefully they can follow that up with some decent actors...

Hasbro is well involved and they're known for seeing things through - let's hope their reputation holds.

I think this is the worst idea. Magic as a movie? :P

Magic is a purely mechanics orientated game. There are some tidbits of back-story but it's all just fluff. If this movie actually gets made, it's going to need same amazing script-writing, otherwise it's going to be just awful.

Looking forward to see what comes out of this movie and if it will exist, I use to play the card game years back, was fun.

it will either be brilliant, or another "Last Air Bender" disaster...

Jeez please dont even mention the last air bender... what a stuff up...

I think the movie is basically only taking the "mythology" from the cards, and the story will be from the books...

Just don't give it to M. Night Shyamalan and it might have a chance.
