Advice: Xbox 360 Arcade Overheating

Hi all,

I've been having this weird problem over the past two weeks where my Xbox 360 Arcade overheats while I am playing a game. Basically what happens is that it allows me to play for a few minutes, then the fans start ramping up a gear and tries to cool the systems down, making a really high-pitched noise. When it can't, the system just shuts down, with the two top portions of the status ring flashing red.

Now, I Google'd the issue and I came up with two possible issues:

1. The vents might be clogged with dust, thereby not allowing air through to cool the system
2. The thermal paste of the GPU might be finished

I tried the vents solution, by using compressed air (thanks, BP) to clean out the vents. Now, this seemed to work, but in reality it only delayed the shutdown by a few minutes.

My next option is to give my console to BT Games for an assessment of what is wrong. But before I do that, I'd like to know if anyone on the forum has experienced something similar and can perhaps offer me some advice on the matter.

When I had my xbox360 I encountered a similar issue, especially in the hot summer months.

I managed to "fix" the issue by buying a 3rd party cooler that clips on at the back. Basically it's extra fans and cools down the system alot better.

I have not encountered any shutdowns since then, maybe just once, if I remember correctly. But it's much better and can actually extend the console's lifetime!

If you do not want to spend some extra money, have BT games have a look at it.

Thanks for the reply. Funnily enough, I neglected to mention that I used a use dual-fan air intake systems that fed air in into the back vents (where the fans are located). It still overheated, but I suppose I can give that another try.
 
Ah I see.

In that case there must be something else wrong, probably hectic dust inside or you will need new heatpaste.

Let us know what the outcome is!

Ja, I'm trying to delay taking my console in to them. I really don't want to do that. That's why I'm hoping that someone on here knows what to do before I spend money on it.
 
You can Diy it to be liquid cooled with the right equipment.

I would also suggest you install a heat monitor on the CPU and GPU so you can see when it spikes.

Have you opened it up yet?

I have thought about opening it up. Because the warranty has expired, that would probably be the best option. The worst that can happen is that I mess up my console. But I have watched a video or two about opening the unit and what to be cautious of.
 
Wasn't the 360 Arcade known for overheating and the RROD?

Knew a few people who tried 'fixing' these issues, but never succeeded.

I think its time for an upgrade!

Yeah, but I have the Bear Grylls of Arcades. It has been around for almost 6 years now and hasn't had that many problems. So if I can keep this one, I am more than happy to do that. Although, those Slims do look really nice.

I still have the 360 Elite (right before the slims came out), and have also had no issues so far. Think I've had it for about 4 years now?

But I'm contemplating getting a slim for the kinect support. I need some active games!

The old ones have no Kinect support? Who'd have thunk.
 
I still have a 360 arcade that's still going strong as well. I think they sorted out the overheating/RROD issue sometime during the arcade's lifetime if I remember correctly, so the later models don't have that problem.

But I would take it in before it packs in if I were you. Rather spend a bit on some preventative maintenance now than wait until it dies completely.

Yeah, it isn't being used right now. But I think perhaps I should just bite the bullet and take it in.

Might not even be expensive if they just need to clean out dust and replace some thermal paste. I'm sure they would do an assessment and give you a quote before they go ahead and do everything.

Hehe. We are talking about BT Games here. They'll probably say R600 (same as replacing a disk drive) and then do a few small things. Still, I have to fix that little guy.

Heh. Yeah Zaps is on the other end of the Jukskei of me. I could probably make a plan and take it to Zaps, I trust those guys a bit more. The only reason why I mention BT is because they are the closest to me.

I don't know about BT games so much, pretty much everything I read about them is a rant about how much they suck
