Is it just me or is everyone blind to the obvious?

@Lyt, I assume you're talking about this thread, in which Orion 'resurrected' a 9 day old thread with a perfectly valid post, after which you then complained about necroposting (9 days can hardly be considered necroposting) and then went out of your way to insult him in the competition thread.

Just keep things a bit in perspective here.

I didn't even mention you, WTF

No, I replied to what you said. I, to a degree, agree that the regulars should be able to moderate the quality of this influx of activity. It seems many do so by reporting.

Thing is, as similar as all forums are to each other, their core community members define their styles. MyGaming is very different to SAGamer as it is to Xbox-360. I like this community and thus choose to support it.

bro he neg repped me for saying #yolo :( as for this topic i spam regardless of comps sometimes i just don't have the time other times i have to much so embrace my spam

Yeah same. I sometimes try and be annoying :p but its all in good fun.

On the upside it's a lot of traffic for MyGaming but on the down side i have never seen so many posts in such a short time. since i joined mygaming

And some of these threads that get revived are older than 4 months, that's just sad but like the afrikaans saying goes "moenie ou koeie uit die sloot grawe nie"

Leave the old posts alone they are done. i think maybve james should lock any post older than a month that hasn't seen any activity for more than a month

I knew all my post whoring would come and bite me in the ass :o :p

On a serious note though, just how bad are things? I haven't been on the forum in a while.

Usually after a forum hiatus, I tend to update some of my threads, some that even experience a month or two without activity, because they're usually created with the intention of long life spans in mind (e.g. The Artists Unite thread, Infinite Crisis which I recently updated with info and some videos, and the current Reader's thread).

I wonder if that could also be frowned upon :?

I'm struggling to stay in that list, let alone get to the top 20 >.< Can't we all just agree that it's a draw and we'll split the PS4 40 ways or so. So we'll each get it for like a week of the year

Unfortunately, we have also seen reasoned necro's in the past, where a 6 month thread would be pulled up with an interesting, relevant new post, so I don't think locking is the correct solution. I rather report and neg rep when nothing of value is added by the necroer. Necroee. Necromancer.

Necromancer, I'm going with necromancer.

I agree with this. Locking certain threads might be useful but if information on an upcoming game is posted with more information following later then it helps to re-use the existing thread to add the new information - I prefer to have all of the related information in one place.

It might be a good idea to lock a thread if it has not received a reply in a month or 2. We can always create a new thread and add the old threads link to it like when James creates a new TK thread and links it to the old one in his 1st post.

It might be a silly question but why is thread necroing bad?

I suppose in some cases it makes sense to necro. Like lets say Audiosurf gets an update and then we resurrect the existing Audiosurf thread to continue talking about it. Or should a new one be created especially for the update? What if there isn't even an update and you just want to talk about Audiosurf?

Also, how old must a thread be to be considered dead?

The only times when thread necroing is bad in my opinion is if the necro post doesn't add anything worthwhile but even that's debatable because the person may only want to continue that discussion without starting a new one.

I really don't see thread necroing as something to get upset about. But that's my opinion of course.

Probably depends in the manner in which it is done. Some threads are open to it I think, others not so much and when one guy pops up with an "I agree" post, not giving any reason or context, he kinda opens himself up to be flamed by the regulars.

I don't think thread necroing is always bad. If it's relevant as in the way you described, then it's fine. It's a problem when people post pointless, "Ja, I totally agree", and "yes, my mom's a gamer too", just to get their post count up.

I have absolutely no problem with the increased activity and the new contributions from the new guys. I like the increase in traffic here, it's very cool. I get that there is some resentment from the longer-standing members, but I don't think it's all justified and sometimes it's downright territorial.

So were the forums pretty dead before the competition? Obviously I only joined yesterday but was very impressed with the level of activity compared to other SA forums I've attempted to get into and I'm really enjoying it. I try not to post worthless drivel and I hope over time the regulars see that I am here for the long run :)

We had a chat about necroing somewhere before.

It's fine if it is on topic. But a lot of times during competitions you get replies to old threads that are totally not on topic or even irrelevant. I know people hate the ten character rule but at least it stops necros to threads with replies like "lol yeah"

It wasn't dead but it wasn't close to as busy as it is now. Welcome to MyGaming and may you be here for a long time and come back every day and become a regular. :)

Thanks. I hope to. I'm still learning the ropes of this forum compared to others I've been a member of but getting there.

I'm glad that someone else points this out for a change. There's a large-ish group of members on the forum who seem to have made it their job to make it difficult for new members to fit in around here, which includes being excessively rude to new members across the board and running around like little policemen looking for any 'wrongdoing.' As a relatively new-ish member myself I've had run-ins with some of these people on more than one occasion and I've called them out on it every time.

I don't think these people realise how awful they make it for new members to be here. Every time someone joins a new forum, whether it's their first forum or their 500th, it takes time to learn the ropes, learn the people and settle yourself in. This isn't made much easier when there's a self-appointed forum policeman following you around like a bloodhound.

I strongly believe that this naked hostility from parts of the older community is part of why we don't seem to have a very good new user retention rate. As I've said countless times before, when you see a user posting in a way that you think contravenes the forum rules, RBP his post and move on. Don't take it into your own hands by posting and calling him/her out on it, because you're only making things worse. Let the moderators deal with it, because that's what they're here for. If it were up to you to take the law (so to speak) into your own hands, you would have been made a moderator.

I actually wish James would start handing out infractions every time one of these self-appointed moderators took the law into his/her own hands. It would kill the hostile atmosphere that new users have to grow in and also reminds these people who the real authorities are around here.

/Dammit, sorry for the essay. I try to keep it short, but when I look up again I've already written four paragraphs. :(

A necro isn't a thread that's a week old or even three - that's still up for additional posts.

Using the Necroscale,

Bronze Necro: 2 months
Silver Necro: 5/6 months
Gold Necro: 7-12 months
Platinum Necro: 1 year +
Diamond Necro: Any thing higher than 4 years (and yes it's happened)
