Microsoft Says Getting Worked Up Over 30fps Isn't Worth It

Microsoft on 1080p/60fps -- "These little things get way overblown"

The real differences between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 games are "pretty minor," so making a point to get worked up over benchmarks like 1080p and 60fps isn't worth it, Xbox director of product planning Albert Penello has said.

"Look, I've had a lot of time to think about this and I believe in what I said. I believe that the differences [between the PS4 and Xbox One] is not that great," Penello said during the latest Gamertagradio podcast. "And I know what is going on behind the scenes and I have access to more information about some of this...than a lot of people. Sometimes I think people tend to neglect the points that are in my favor and they like to highlight the points that tell me that I am wrong. Right now, I still think Ryse is still the best looking game on any platform. Period. End of story."

Square Enix revealed earlier this week that the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will run at 60fps on PS4, while the Xbox One frame rate remains a mystery. Penello said it could be true that Tomb Raider runs at 30fps on Xbox One, but pointed out that the Xbox One is just a couple months old and experiences are only going to get better with time.

"I think if you look at the titles that we launched that were multiplatform titles, the bulk of them were the same [resolution and frame rate]," Penello said. "I think there were 12 titles released on both platforms [PS4 and Xbox One], and all but three of them had basically the same performance on both boxes. Everybody wants to focus on...there's a frame rate thing going on with Tomb Raider, there is a resolution thing going on and OK, there's a lot of reasons why that could be true but we are weeks in, we just shipped, it's a long generation."

"I think people who bought an Xbox One are going to be in for an awesome generation of games that are only going to get better," he added. "And an awesome generation of experiences. I think these little things get way overblown versus like the quality of the games and the real differences in the two experiences which are pretty minor."

Penello was joined by Xbox chief of staff Aaron Greenberg on the podcast, who offered a unique analogy for the differences between the Xbox One and PS4 with respect to the ongoing 1080p/60fps debate.

"At the end of the day, it's like we're the movie theater that has all the blockbuster movies and has the most screens," Greenberg said. "And then somebody has figured out that there's also another movie theater that has less screens but like if you look at this one movie sometimes it looks better on their screen. And on our movie theater, sure, sometimes some of our movies look better. You know what, I think the games on PS4 look fantastic. I play them, I enjoy them. I think they've done a great job with their device. I think it's great for the industry that they've had success. At the end of the day, if I have to pick one box, I'm going to pick ours. I work here. I root for the home team. I'm very biased. I feel like if you're going to buy one box, you should buy the Xbox One because it does deliver an all-in-one experience. It does have the best exclusives. It does have the best-looking games."

Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida told GameSpot last year that native 1080p allows you to be a "better gamer."

"I don't think any team is just fixated on 1080p; it's just one of the options...but [1080p] games allow you to be more precise and a better gamer. That's clearly the benefit," he said at the time.

Sounds like they are overcompensating at this stage :p. Thoughts?

Good find Brendan.

Right now there may not be any important differences in performances, but what about 2 years down the line? If the PS4 is capable to run Tomb Raider Definitive Edition @ 60fps right now and the XBone can't, it just means that once a game comes out that only run at 30fps on the PS4, the XBone won't be able to handle the same version at a playable resolution/frame-rate.
So what will happen? One of the following, most likely:

a. The devs release a version for XBone that cuts back on the eye candy. This means more $$$ being spend and some smaller devs won't be able to afford that option.
b. Develop the game to run smoothly on the XBone and don't worry about utilizing the power of PS4. This means the game may lack that all important eye candy next to it's competitors. Less sales means less $$$ in pocket.
c. Skip the XBone and release PS4 exclusive. If this trend takes hold it could snowball and eventually put Microsoft in a position where they are the small theater down the alley that only shows... well... movies that guys wearing trench-coats prefer.

What Microsoft decide to do may well be crucial to the future of XBox. Maybe not life or death, but the repercussions will be felt for many years to come.

He keeps mentioning that the games for the XBox One will keep getting better. The thing is, so will the PS4 games. As a Microsoft fan of sorts I find the whole XBox One thing very disappointing. I mean they couldn't even be bothered to include us at launch.

My puny mind hadn't even thought of that :O. I hope for option C. I hate when developer's visions are compromised by their desire to release multiplatform (i.e. developing with the weaker console in mind). I'm by no means a Sony fanboy, I had both consoles last gen. I only plan to get a PS4 this gen though, so I would prefer its games aren't once again held back by the Xbone, as a lot of last-gen multiplatform games were. Guess what happens remains to be seen.

Well what else could he say they are in a really bad position there is a bigger performance gap than they expected and it shows.:)

I'm really disappointed by all the negativity surrounding the Bone. I was a keen fan if the 360 and it got ten times more gametime than my ps3. I had initially planned to get the xbone over the ps4,but it appears that I shall have to switch allegiance this gen

As a PC only gamer, I hope they opt for C cause I am tired of this 30 fps bull we have today (NFS Rivals I am looking at you) but again looking at mentioned example they gonna go with B and drag the rest of us to that level even if our systems can handle so much more.

I'm not sure B will be the option developers have all ready shown they will use the ps4 power, but if you talking strickly pc ports you could be correct.

Yeah option b is the likeliest to occur should Square Enix still desire to do business with Microsoft in the future. For immediate profitability they should actually undertake option a; however at this stage Microsoft cannot afford to be seen as at all inferior to Sony in terms of performance - thus they will likely be meting out pressure on the devs to ensure that a standard of "equality" is met.

people need to get acquainted with the system first, look at first gen 360 titles and look at current gen 360 titles and ask yourself how did they manage to get games looking so good over the years on the same system, it all comes down to optimization. remember when first gen ps3 games came out and it looked inferior to 360 titles (that was because people didnt know how to utilise the spe's in the cell yet) the same with the xbone, once devs start making use of the esram for additional bandwidth the framerate quality of the titles will definitely improve

We get that, but this argument rely on the belief that the PS4 development will stay static while XBone would improve, which we know is not true.

Both will improve as the developers optimize their code for the systems. So Xbox will mostly if not always lag behind.

I have only ever owned PlayStation, but with the "Next Gen" machines I decided i would seriously consider which machine i go for, as i was impressed with the 360... Not to say i wasnt impresses with the PS3, but all my mates went with X-Box, and that kinda sucked...

So now with all of this coming to light, It seems that the PS4 is the better Gaming Machine, where as the X-Box one is the better media center... For us in SA our infrastructure isnt really where it needs to be for streaming media, so if the PS4 is the better gaming machine, then thats where i will spend my money...

My exact same stance. I'm really sad things turned out the way they did - I feel insulted actually.

To be fair to MS gamers like us are not their primary demographic. We are periphery target group at best; and at worst not even a blip on their radar. So they really don't care about non-1st world at this stage

That's not fair, nor is it new news :p

What we're arguing is exactly what you said.

Yip... We probably dont even account to 1% of the world wide sales to both MS and Sony when it comes to consoles...

What makes the PS4 a clear winner in my opinion (Besides the fact that I am a Sony fanboy :p) in the 60fps.

Play CoD and then BF3 on console, which feels better? CoD. It's not something you really notice if you haven't played at 60fps, but once you have you can't help but feel like there's something not quite right with a 30fps game. The sole reason why I enjoy BF4 as much as I do is due to the fact that it runs at 60fps (Was on console before) making the experience so much better for me.

So I think it is a big deal.

Perfectly fair, it is business after all :p

Agreed; Whenever people argue that 60fps gaming is irrelevant hasn't played 60fps. I wonder though if MS and Sony are focused on making 60fps the new standard. Or perhaps if the decision of which platform to buy a game for will come down mostly to which version has 60fps

At 1080P 60fps > 30fps.

It's that simple. Press statements like these only make MS look like sore losers at this point. They should rather keep quiet and put some cards on the table. If they can make Forza 5 play at 60fps at 1080P - why can't they keep up with other PS4 cross-platform titles doing the same?
