The Samsung Galaxy S5: In the past few months there seem to have been quite a few rumours regarding the yet to be announced Galaxy S5 such as keeping the display at 1080p (however don't lost all hope as they may still surprise us with a 2k display) and bundling in a finger print scanner (not sure who could have done that yet). Of course with nothing confirmed for the Galaxy S5 just yet we may just be given all the juicy details from Samsung at a event they'll be holding later this month.
Via IGN:
Today the company tweeted an invitation for the first episode of its Unpacked 5 event, which will be held on February 24th, the first day of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Samsung regularly uses its Unpacked events to announce new hardware.

Interestingly enough it looks as if they also plan to release a new Galaxy Gear soon too (I find this interesting only because I think that it has real potential if they can improve on what I had read about the original Galaxy Gear watch released)
A new version of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch is expected to be announced at around the same time as the Galaxy S5 reveal.

I'm upgrading this year, looking to upgrade my s3 with the s5 if specs are great. We should probably have the phone by June in SA

I think 2014 is going to be an awesome year for smartphones. Love it or hate it, Apple is bringing out their large screen device, which i will be snatching up in a heart beat. I am a huge iOS fan, due to me not using half of what Android is capable of.

So you have the new S5, the new iPhone, most probably new HTC and Sony devices, and others. Those 3 are going to seriously have to go a huge marketing campaign to get the edge over the other.

Yeah my contract has already expired too so I'll wait it out a few more months. How has your S3 treated you?

Been awesome, I have loaded so many custom roms on it before, customized it to the max. On Android 4.3 now ( stock rom ).
However my battery started to become swollen(battery lasted like 7 hours max) bought a new one and now its a little over 24hours with medium usage.

Love this phone, do not even want to upgrade because it already does everything it's supposed to.

Iv got the S4 Mini, and its been an absolutely brilliant phone! Im also due an upgrade now, was wondering about whether I should go with the S4 standard or wait for a bit.... I will now be waiting....

That thing looks pretty good. Isn't it meant to have a metal housing too this time? Or they're gonna bring out two versions of it similar to Apples 5S and 5C.

From what I've heard, there will be two version. Metal and plastic. Also something like a $100 price difference between the two.

It's pretty much what is to be expected from Samsung on their flagship phone. Not saying that's a bad thing though. I like the fact that they are relooking at the built quality of the phone, and the early indications does seem that this will be a cracker of a phone. I just wish they would get rid of their Samsung bloatware.

Still, I'm rocking my HTC One, and will not need an upgrade for atleast a year and a half.

That HTC one is a great device, probably the best of this "generation"

I like how the curving the screen around the device, looks very cool, but could be extremely unpractical...

When Samsung launched their curved screen tech, I also thought it would be impractical, but as any new phone these days are, it will come down to the apps, and how they benefit from the screen design. If it's anything like their current "cool things to have in a phone" like these eye tracking shit, then it's going to flop. They shouldn't use it as a gimmick only. If they can show us the true value, it may even catch on and become a new standard.

Ye you right, The only other place iv seen it is on that Blackberry... Any idea how it was there?

That eye tracking shit and the "wave your hand over the phone" crap really were/are a waste of time... A retinal scanner in your phone for security... Now that would be cool... Online banking compatible etc...

Well i can upgrade to the Note 3 this month but now i'm wondering if i should wait and compare the 2 first i'm currently on a note 2

If you are a fan of the form factor of the Note, and enjoy the practicality of the stylus, then go for the Note 3. My boss recently got one, and it's an amazing piece of kit that. Really good built quality as well. It has a nice feeling leathery type back panel which feels actually quite premium.

Specs wise, expect the S5 to be better that the Note 3, but not by that much

Seems interesting to be sure; but I am worried that at the rate that they are going, (a new flagship model every year), they will reach the point where they can only make incremental differences in the tech itself. It's already kind of reaching that point

Still better than iPhone... Cant keep up with the launches of the iPhones... i5 Launch! i5S Launch! i5C Launch! i6 release date! Bam!

But that's pretty much the norm with technology and especially smart phones. Each year they come out with a new model that is an improvement on last years model, but not a major innovation. Innovations generally take time and are slowly incorporated into the technology as each new release comes out.

Oh awesome. I'm due an upgrade in a few months, and I was hoping to get an S4. Maybe I can get an S5 by then, or at least a cheaper deal on an S4

I don't think the S4 was quite the knock-out Samsung was hoping for. As far as I'm aware, it's sales figures pales in comparison to older generations S phones, and even the latest iPhone. I think Samsung made a strategic decision to fast-track a newer model to generate more sales
