So...how much would it cost to make a film based on Minecraft as a tribute to it's fans? Well these guys are looking to make $600,000 via their Kickstarter project for: Birth of Man - A Minecraft Feature Film

We're raising funds for a feature film - set in the world of Minecraft. Help us make this epic fantasy a reality!

We would like to invite you to build something that has never been done before - a full-length feature film that is set in the world of Minecraft!

We are massive fans of the Minecraft game! We have logged many hours playing the game and have made a bunch of fan films set in the world of Minecraft that have already been very well received online.

Moreover, we have been repeatedly disappointed by Hollywood's interpretations and creations of movies based on popular video-game franchises. We would love to see a video-game movie done right, and we feel that, as people with their feet in both the gaming and film-making worlds, we are the right people to do it. We specialize in creating films containing blockbuster quality on a hundredth of the budget that Hollywood requires by utilizing modern technology and a "think-outside-the-box" attitude approach to film-making.

Our plan is to tell an epic fantasy story that would stand alone on its own merit and set that story in the world of Minecraft for its visual appeal and the unique physical rules within the world.

At the moment when posting this article their stats over on kickstarter were as follows:

Would you want a full length feature movie based on Minecraft?

Surely this isn't legal? Square Enix didn't take too kindly to a Kickstarter page a while back where fans were asking for funds to make a FFVII fan film.

Ya but this is Minecraft :D

Realistically though... WTF... ITs bad enough that i play a game thats resembling the glory days of 20 years ago... Now you want me to sit through a movie of it? And how did they get to the 600 000 mark? Thats a lot of cash for what they doing...

UPDATE:

Over on the Kickstarter page for this project one can find that it has been canceled.
Funding Canceled Funding for this project was canceled by the project creator 1 day ago.

Now there aren't any details specified as to why it was cancelled however over on Twitter it seems that it may be because the creators aren't too happy about it...which no doubt means that they hadn't actually mentioned this to them (maybe it will go ahead in future but only if they can put some kind of deal together):

Well its the same story if I go and create a Kickstarter for a The Last of Us film, naturally the IP owners are going to be angry that they were not consulted on it nor did they have any deals in place.

Shocking that the guy who started the Kickstarter didn't consider this outcome.

Yup - I would have imagined that he would have arranged some kind of deal with Mojang before he went along as I'm sure they would also wanted to have some input. One the one hand I would liked to have seen if this would have eventually been funded though...with a formal deal in place I'm sure they'd easily be able to hit that target but of course now we never may know.
