THat kind of thinking is ingrained in our culture...and ironically is one of the defining attributes of it.

Bull<swearword>

That kind of thinking is because crime is so rife and brutal in SA that we don't see small things like jaywalking or littering as crimes anymore.

Do you remember anytime in your entire life when you considered littering or jaywalking as a bad thing? Or have you ever been told that trying to get the most out of a somewhat shady deal is wrong?

Rampant crime is a symptom of the South African mindset; not the root cause.

When I was little I was told the police would catch me if I don't throw something in a bin. I'm almost 35 now and I still feel guilty if I drop a wrapper or something somewhere by accident.

WHOAH! That's a totally different SA than what I have grown up seeing

Yes, I was fined in JHB of all places back in 84 for jaywalking, and as Eugene pointed out Cops use to tell you to pick junk up. I remember once coming from a rave at Bella Napoli when a cop told me to pick up some junk on the floor in Hillbrow, best of all it was not my rubbish, I remeber this clearly as I had a hissy fit about it.

A very very different SA as to the one that exists now. And as such the culture was different; that South Africa is long dead and as such has changed how the culture has evolved into the new millennium.
