Wolverine-like cat is latest pet craze

A new breed of cat with a likeness to the X-Men character Wolverine is becoming the latest craze for pet owners.

The werewolf-like Lykoi cat is a natural mutation from a domestic shorthair that resembles the movie character, played by Hugh Jackman.

It is now being championed by a group of breeders spearheaded by Tennessee-based Lykoi specialist Johnny Gobble and his family.

Mr Gobble, a vet, says Lykois began as a mix of a natural occurring Sphynx cat mutation and a black domestic shorthair, with the first litter being born in July 2010.

"The mutation has occurred in other cats, but to date, no reports of anyone starting a breed have been made," he said.

They decided the name Lykoi for the breed was "very fitting" because it is the Greek word for 'wolf'.

Mr Gobble had the cats tested to ensure their unusual coat wasn't a sign of disease but they were given a clear bill of health.

"What they did find is that some hair follicles lacked all the necessary components required to create hair, which is why Lykoi lack an undercoat," he said.

Encouraged by the results, they began breeding the cats and were soon producing the first Lykoi purebreds which are proving increasingly popular with pet owners.

Personally I think it's ugly but I'm not judging

100% Agreed.

I would much rather prefer the other new craze, a F1 or F2 Savana.

But for that I need to win the Lotto 1st. Not to pay for the cat or the food, more likely to pay for all the lawsuits on missing pets in da area.

Looks like its got a skin problem to be honest. Unless its indestructible and has huge retractable claws its not a wolverine cat.

Looks like that "wolverine" cat has mange... Basically hair loss that makes it look really scraggly...

That other leopard cat looks awesome! Ever seen a Norwegian Forrest Cat? Also really big!

Had a Main Coon before, very similar in size to the Norwegian. Saw a Savana by a friend over the weekend, they are way bigger.

If it wasn't so friendly would have stressed the whole time I was there. Also don't think I would play with it like I do on normal cats, if she brings out the claw there will be blood, guaranteed.

Those main coon's are freaking massive. My sister was interested in one a while back. Beautiful things.

Its like having a tame tiger around. Expensive cats though...

Lol no, I have a 12Kg Main Coon, Sonny. He is a beast, but definitely not a tiger :p Very timid and lovable!

Was just going to say, my Main Coon was a fluffy teddy bear with a heartbeat that didn't even play with rodents. He would litrally lie in the sun and watch birds hop over him.

I'd love to have a Main Coon or a Savanna. Problem is, here in the flatlands normal municipal rules do not apply: I have two neighbors with chickens and it could cause a... situation. On the chicken-free side of my property is a wildlife enclosure and my (not so) little bobcat cross breed has already caught a rabbit and I've seen him stalk a Steenbok and even a Blesbok :wtf:
I think a Savanna will actually stand a chance with those.

Haha, well obviously it was a very sarcastic over exaggeration. My mate has a couple of them, and they're just huge.

Gotta admit though...
