The Gaymer Thread

Much write, very gaming
Inspired by a certain other off-topic thread that gained a lot of attention recently, I figured MyGaming could do with a spot for all LGBTQI + other gamers to sort of congregate and perhaps discuss stuff that impacts us - gaming or otherwise.

While I use the term "gaymer" a bit tongue-in-cheek - because let's face it, gamers are gamers, and the term doesn't quite encapsulate everyone - but sometimes it's good to know there's a place you can go to talk about stuff that, sometimes, straight people just don't get.

Like how unfair it is you can't romance Garrus with MaleShep in vanilla Mass Effect *cries into hand-painted Team Vakarian banner*

Aside from that, though, I feel MyGaming should be, and is, a place that you can be free to be you - and when it comes to sexuality or sexual orientation, sometimes that can be daunting, and sometimes you can feel very alone in the world.

So think of this as a thread to discuss all things LGBTQI related - even if it's just to ask what LGBTQI stands for.

It can be a place to come out, seek advice, share experiences, or connect with other gaymers, or whatever you feel is relevant (see note below).

Everyone is welcome.

Note: this is a hate-free zone, and forumites who insist on coming in here to stir nonsense (gay, straight, or otherwise) and spew hate or push veiled anti-gay agendas will be dealt with accordingly.

This is a pro-gay thread. If you believe being gay is wrong, disgusting, unnatural, offensive, against your religion, or a choice, you should probably not be here.

This is not a place to defend being gay - we just want a happy space.

I will start by asking, what does LGBTQI stand for? :D (Seriously, don't know the abbreviation...)

A bit soon for this thread me thinks but I'm keen to see what happens

I think as a catch-all thread (with no specific "agenda" so to speak), it should be fine. Its purpose is simply to provide the platform where there wasn't before.

I like to think that anyone who feels they would disagree with the content would be able to stay away :) the clue is in the thread title, after all.

Haha, it basically means Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer and Intersex.

It's supposed to cover the broader and more specific sexual identities - though a lot of people debate how far it should go in terms of adding on identities. Generally people just use LGBT as the standard.

... I'd like to know what does the QI in LGBTQI stand for? (Edit: see its just been answered above me, thanks ;))

Anyhow, I'll get things going. As those that followed the Ellen thread may know by now, I too am a gaymer. Have been all my life, and came out to my parents when I was 17. Can't say it was easy, it was a particularly tough time for my mom (my parents are divorced so my Dad, while accepting, didn't have to face the issue head-on so I guess it was easier for him), but we worked things through and she loves me unconditionally. Oddly enough, my younger brother who finished school last year also recently came out as transgender, so I do have a lot of sympathy for my poor mother :p

I'm in a long-term relationship with another wonderful gaymer I had the privilege of meeting quite soon after finishing high school. It's awesome to be in a relationship where your other half understands your passion for gaming and I'm very happy with him.

Very happy to be surrounded by such accepting forum folk, I am ashamed to admit I was actually very surprised at the supporting nature of everyone here. Goes to show the world truly is changing :D

Haha that was partly the inspiration for this thread. When I first crawled onto the great expanse that is the Internet, I was also quite on the down-low in terms of sexuality, because you do tend to expect a poor reaction.

I don't think MyGaming is like that, and it's cool to have a place where you can feel welcome, no matter which way you swing :).

A couple of friends of mine come from families where both siblings ended up being gay - it seems to be a thing!

The gaymer thread

The Q and I had to be added for intersexed and queer people who don't ID themselves as gay or transgendered but still have attractions and so on in the LGBT lifestyle if that makes sense.

Some say Q is for questioning but I feel that doesn't help you ID anything

My moms cousin is still in the closet we all know he is gay but he is such a fantastic man can be a bitch of note though :p

He is the only family my mom and brother and I have now :-/

Haha, all in favor of changing the site name to MyGayming with a rainbow flag as the background?

Haha! I think Rainbow Batachu is enough gay representation on the MyGaming staff side ^_^

Yeah things can get tricky when it comes to the discussions around sex, gender, sexuality and the entire spectrum linking them all together. I think "Queer" is a decent catch-all term for people who don't subscribe or identify as any of the broader identities. Though I'm sure many people would disagree.
