Xbox One will not be ditching the Kinect

That makes sense. The most appealing thing about the Xbox One to me is the interaction with the console via the Kinect. If I buy the Xbox One, the Kinect (and the multimedia capabilities) would be the primary reason(s) for purchase and I consider them to be an advantageous selling point over the PlayStation 4.

This. While I'm not a fan of how they've handled things from their announcement I really do understand their vision and the benefits of including it with every console is that it can hopefully be utilized in every single game made for the console.

I think many people still compare it to the Xbox 360's iteration of the Kinect. It was basically the groundwork for 2.0, but people only saw on-rails and dance games being made for the utility. Now, the entire "face" of the console is controlled by it. If used properly in the entertainment portion AND in the games department, this can be something that makes the PlayStation 4's entertainment effort look like a clown show.

PS4 has a distinct lack of any entertainment effort whatsoever as it is (I'm talking non-games entertainment), and I'm saying this as a Sony fanboy :p

I agree. I love PlayStation, but they didn't really think about media entertainment here. I know people are compensation for this by saying that it focusses on gaming, but that's rubbish. It should cater for other things too.

I remember jamming CDs on my PSOne because it was awesome and had rad visualizations running at the same time.

If the price was the same and I had the choice to get an xbox with or without a kinect I would get it with the kinect. If I had the choice to save R1000, then I would ditch the kinect in a heart beat.

Why? I wouldn't want to burn out the laser playing dvd's from mr video every weekend. Personally I would rather have a good entertainment system and keep my gaming separate, just like I don't play MP3's on my phone, or watch videos on my tablet, but that is just a personal preference I guess.

Exactly. Personal preference.

The Xbox One is basically like a piece of middleware that is trying to integrate all the multimedia needs. I like that idea. Talking to your TV to have it do tasks is a fantastic concept that hasn't really been done well. The HDMI pass through is just genius. Insta-switch between gaming and TV. And the fact that it can interpret EPG data makes me pretty giddy.

The Kinect at this point is essentially their identifying feature. At this stage I don't think they could take the Kinect away even if they wanted to; they have invested far too much in the tech and the marketing to backpedal now
