Worry PC trend or isolated situation? [Steam/South Park]

Hey guys

So I'm actually thinking of buying a game without it being on sale. Craziness.

The game? South Park: The Stick of Truth.

The problem? It's $60 on Steam - so I decided to look at a few local stockists as rarely do we find R600 games for PC release in SA. Then I noticed something; no one stocks it locally - Kalahari has it but imports it from the US (14 days), BT Games doesn't list it online and neither does Takealot.

Is Steam blocking local stockists so that we HAVE to pay $60 for a PC game? Or is it Ubisoft (more likely)? Is this going to be a new trend to squeeze precious cents out of South Africans?

Don't know what the reason for this is but if I were you I'd grab it from kalahari and just wait the 2 weeks. It's cheaper and it won't be censored

Agree with MalicE

Would rather buy local and wait the 2 weeks. Steam prices are only good if items are on sale, else it pays to shop local.

Oh and current exchange rate that $60 would be more like R650 than R600

I dont think Steam can do that, it must be in retailers, im sure eventually it will be in the usual game shops, it only releases here today so shops might take a week or so to stock it.

Well I can't pre-purchase it like PS3/XBox people, so those retailers are actually quite silly.

Also, the buying local option isn't really true; it's a local stockist that has to import a US version - taking 14 days to do so without a guarantee that it's a Steam version of the game.

I wonder if the apparent controversies of the game had anything to do with the decision of retailers. I don't think Steam has the power to tell local retailers to not stock a game.

The Kalahari option is the best. Bought my copy from them. So hopefully it will arrive next week.

Naughty naughty...

Game looks like a lot of fun though but I don't think it's worth R650. And as DieGrootHammer said, Steam doesn't have the power to control the retail stores here that stock the game.

Probably Ubisoft - it sounds like the kind of thing they would do.

I just spoke to Megarom (Ubisoft distributor) and they confirmed they brought in plenty of copies of The Stick of Truth on all platforms (PS3, Xbox 360, and PC).

If retailers are importing their own stock form the US, that's their choice.

I'm trying to get hold of Kalahari to see what they say.

At this point I'm considering cancelling my Kalahari pre-order and paying the R80 more to get the digital (discounted) version from Greenman Gaming.

Thanks man - that's weird cause they're simply not listed in search for any stockist.

Kalahari
Takealot
BTGames Please note their ETA is 2015! And no price.
Nothing on Incredible Connection either...

So yeah - it's a bit weird.

I agree, very weird.

I ordered my copy through Kalahari and now it's listed as "out of stock" - maybe the PC version demand has been massive for this game?

Tell me more of this discounted Greenman Gaming version? :P I checked on their site - also $60. Eish.

It looks like there was a shortfall in the first shipment of the PC version in SA, so there's no stock left. Megarom is expecting more stock "in the next week or so".

Use this promo code to get the 25% discount: KCE1U6-JJ96XO-IR5W7L

We already missed the boat on the pre-order goodies (some equipment items for various classes, nothing very desirable).

It'll cost you about R80-R90 more than the Kalahari price (which is now out of stock).

I just got a mail from Kalahari saying my order has been delayed with no arrival date predicted.

Thanks for the update :)

Tweeted to them early on before I got the same email and they responded with this in the tweet yet the email is different.
@CrzWaco Hi, you will have the item on Friday the 07th. :)

I know BT Games take it off the site just before the games releases as to differentiate between preorders and walk in / online purchases after release day so it should make its way back on their site soon I would say.
