Dark Souls

No dude I pretty much suck. I am not too great at the dodging. I am trying to take it slow now. So many souls lost... Got past the Taurus Demon. That to me is massive. Loving the game so far.

I cannot get the backstab shit to work. I need loads more practice.

The point is that you are enjoying it, just don't loose hope, it's gets better and harder!

Backstab is almost an art, all comes down to timing and knowing when, where and how far behind them. Kinda like a parry, timing! Keep an eye (or just in the back of your head) on your stamina, you DON'T want this to drop too low, you WILL need this to dodge, evade, block, attack.

Dude I am loving it. I just really suck. Which I can accept. Still finding my groove and shit. Trying to kill a black Knight. Goddamn him.
Oh yeah, I still have to go kill the one in undead parrish...

I have pretty much mastered the art of blocking now, but parrying still eludes me. And I was just starting to get my backstabs right with the claymore, now I have to start over and figure out the range with the scythe

Aaah... tis the joy that is Dark Souls :D
Such wonderful mechanics.

Pondering starting another play through (and hopefully finish it this time). Will probably start with Pyromancer this time round.

Loving this!!!
Here are a few tips that might help:
Practice on weaker enemies to only block with your shield when you need to. It will help you to get into the habit of timing attacks.
Once you have that timing down you can start to practice parry and riposte. When it comes to parries think about it this way, you want to parry your attackers hand. Not his weapon. Hold up your shield and block a few attacks or bait them into attacking so that you can see what the timing is for that enemies attacks. But focus on the speed and timing of the hand not the weapon. Once you have a feel for it. Try to parry the hand as it is next to the opponents body. Once you have parried (You will know if you have done a successful parry) then riposte AND DEAL MAX DAMAGE!! with a smile on your face.

If you struggle with parries then the backstab is the next best thing. The trick here is to remember that you want to aim for the opponents back where it is going to be after the current animation. This might sound confusing but think about it this way. Just like you have a small window of invulnerability when rolling, enemies have a small window where they can not be backstabed while they are attacking / moving. You need to aim for where they are going not where they are and obviously you need to be behind them.

Hope that helps.

I accidentally killed the merchant at undead burg. Now I need him for arrows to go shoot a dragon. Goddammit.

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Malice did the same thing!
Ganna have to wait till you get to the blacksmith.

My policy of not forcing myself to play games that don't immediately pull me it prevents my from doing this. :p

That's what makes DS good. It's not about the initial appeal. I had the game for 5 months before I actually got into it. I found it ugly, the difficulty represented more by the awful controls and bad development etc.

How wrong I was. When I noticed there was a huge following behind the game I just had to find out why. I spoke to fans while playing and when I eventually got beyond Taurus and the Boar I was quite impressed with how rewarding my small accomplishments felt.

This game is a current gen, old-schooler reminding you of how good it felt to beat level 1-2 just to try and beat 1-3 "again" (+1 to all those who get the reference). Do the game justice and try to get past the first 4 Bosses, if you're not sold by that point then you can easily say it's not your bag.

In the water-way that takes you from Firelink to Undeadburg there's a merchant, but you need to go to Lower Undeadburg to unlock the gate that takes you to her. The path to Lower Undeadburg is easily found if you have the lockpick gift, just unlock the door behind the Shield Dude after the Undeadburg Firebomb bridge and descend and push through. When you hit a Castle Like circular Staircase Building, head up (not down) and you'll get the "Other" undead Merchant. She also sells poison arrows which are the most valuable projectiles in the game!

This reminded me of this. :D

I think what makes it so difficult for me is the respawning with the bonfires. You have to be on guard the whole time. So of course I am dying a lot. (once again, so many many souls lost :()

Then I get careless. I know where all the enemies are, but I try and rush through it to get to the point where I died. I will have to learn patience to a much larger extend.

Or the scimitar
I haven't even seen one yet...

Haste = Death

I've been invaded twice now in Sen's Fortress and both times the invaders dropped items and shards and wished me luck :wtf:

Hahaha... Nice community Dark Souls has, some times you get some nice Phantoms that help you. But at the same ttime, be wary!

Go to the Catacombs, off the left side of the cemetery by Firelink follow the path inward, you'll need a source of light - Skeletons drop them.
I found the Catacombs a while back when I was still a spriteling. as I entered I remembered this GIF

so I GTFO

That's but the tip of the Iceberg which is the Catacombs. Just head in to the first Bonfire, it's a lot closer than you think. Get a scimitar and hightail it out of there until you're ready.

Also, if you don't have a holy weapon, you're gonna have a bad time.
