Afrihost torrent policies

Hi,

Im moving over to an Afrihost capped account soon and would like to know if downloading torrents is more risky than using an uncapped account?

By more risky I mean will Afrihost be able to see the same traffic if im on a capped account compared to an uncapped account or are they pretty much the same?

Then if they collecting info on my torrent downloads which is the best way to try block them? VPN or Proxy?

Would legal action be taken in South Africa if you have received warning letters from your ISP and you ignored them and carried on downloading torrents?
 
Downloading games is bad, downloading series so that you do not have to wait until SABC buys rights to it in 5 years' time, is okay :)

There would be less shaping on capped than on uncapped, but as for what they "see" it would be exactly the same.

Your ISP doesn't collect information about your torrent downloads or any other type of download. That's done by third-party copyright protection organisations, who in most cases would be seeding a torrent and logging the IP address of all connections to them. (Your ISP only bothers to shape protocols).

Best way to avoid that is either an IP filter (which won't stop them from seeing your IP on a connection attempt) or a secure VPN (which will be the IP they see) or a seedbox of some sort that will download and seed the torrent on your behalf, allowing you to download it from them via HTTP (thus also avoiding shaping).

No. While not entirely impossible, it's very unlikely, unless you download a torrent of a South African intellectual property and get caught doing so by the nutjobs at SAFACT.

And even then, they'd still have to manage to successfully prosecute you.

Well it actually is the same thing. Downloading a series or music is considered piracy/

No more risky than downloading something off Pirate Bay. Afrihost can't see your torrent contents if you're using encryption, but they can see volume of data moved and the IP addresses you're connecting to.

Using a VPN or proxy to bypass the uncapped Home shaping policies is against their terms, so if they do catch you doing that your account could be closed. Not sure if those terms are the same for their Business accounts, but it's an unshaped account anyway.

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, only if you're pirating content made locally, like music, TV series like Isidingo or a movie like Tsotsi. If you're paranoid about this you can use Telkom because they don't care what you do as long as the bill is paid, although their torrent performance is incredibly sucky at this point.
