Parental Corner

So our second child, a healthy baby girl was born yesterday at 17h50. Kinda weird, our son was born on my brothers birthday, and our girl was born on my wife's brother's birthday. Anyways, amazing how fast everything comes back to you and looking forward to enjoying the new bundle of joy.

congrats dude, they are truly a miracle and a whole heap of fun and joy.

Enjoy bud :D

Congrats dude. I bet having a girl is going to be a whole different experience.

My little boy is the big 01 today! Here he is enjoying his first birthday present ever. Then he went to his ouma's house and got totally spoiled.

Hard to believe it's been a whole year since the last time I got a full night sleep :p

'grats dude. I real special time. Though they can't really comprehend it, it's still amazing. It all get better, easier (and more difficult) from here.

I've already noticed how different things are seeing some of my friends who have newborns. And looking at other friends with older kids as well, they seem so self-sufficient, but they take a whole different kind of parenting.

Congrats on the big 1! Awesome! It gets better :) Sleepwise I mean. I was just getting used to sleeping right through again and now the new one is here. At least she isn't that bad during night, but waking up at 3am in the morning in the winter...not fun.

So my current predicament is something strange. My son for the past few nights has been waking up at around 11pm, not crying, just calling Dada (over and over). So at that time I then decide to turn in for the night. Then he suddenly stops, lies back down and proceeds to fall asleep.

It's as if he doesn't want to sleep unless he knows or is aware that I am in the room and/or also going to sleep. I dunno why this is happening, he normally sleeps right through, every night, even in pitch black darkness.

Stop making so much damn noise when he is trying to sleep :D

Seriously though, is he in the same room as you when he is sleeping? Maybe he is just getting used to you coming to bed that time?

Well, if it weren't for him waking up I wouldn't have gone to bed at that time. It's the only way he goes back to sleep.

Granted I do have the flu and coughing my lungs out. But being in the same room as him and coughing throughout the night, it doesn't bother him. Maybe he hears me coughing from the lounge, I don't know. Strange is all, seeing as he normally sleeps throughout the night and noise(s).

Well once you figure it out after the flu has subsided etc, please let me know for the future lol.

They do the strangest things sometimes hey. I can only think that he notices you going to bed that time each night, even if he doesn't get up, and now maybe he's waking up that time expecting you to come to bed, and if you're not there yet, he calls you because it's now his routine, then when you come in to sleep, he can go back to sleep because everything is now as it's supposed to be....

Well... I am now having good nights again. Not sure exactly what the problem was but it only went on for about 4 or so nights. Now he sleeps through, even through my Dark Souls shenanigans.

Hi guys. I need some guidance here.
I gave my old PC to Kid 44 (age 8) with some shortcuts to flash games for girls and her own Netflix profile etc. We monitor the time she spends on the PC and make sure she gets enough outside play time, so that's not a worry.

The problem is that it is not possible for us to watch her the whole time she uses the internet (we try to check on her as much as possible). And she seems to have a real knack for it. She figured out already how to get to - and use - Google Image search and youtube without any outside help. I enabled the content filter on google, obviously, but I'm still worried she may find some unsavoury content on her own. What can I do to prevent this? I know barring her from the net is the obvious choice and I'm really questioning my own judgement in allowing her on there in the first place but to take it away from her now would be a real punishment and she hasn't done anything to deserve it. She's also learning a lot since she's searching for things she's learned about it school.

Do any of you have experience with third party content filters and site blockers? Any recommendations?

Have you got antivirus on the machine? If not and you're considering putting one on the machine, the paid-for Avira anti-virus comes with a parental control feature - you can also select the types of content you want to block (violence, sex, erotica, etc.)
