Having said that, of course, the difference between 720p and 1080p on anything smaller than a 52" screen is pretty much indiscernible.

No, not running at a screens native resolution will always result in a substantial loss in quality. However, if you never see how it should look, you probably wouldn't notice.
Its like TV vs HDTV, you probably didn't care for HDTV, until you'd seen it in person.
Dude, I'm not that naive. There's an enormous difference between an SDTV and an HDTV. But you'd have to be a complete media snob to discern between 720p and 1080p on anything smaller than a 52" TV. Try it and see.
