Couple jailed for selling both their sons to fund in-game item purchases

Saw this, somehow managed to land on the site.

Kids in China getting addicted to online gaming, and in some cases even dying because of it, has seen the Chinese government hand control of game access over to parents. But sometimes it’s the parents who are the ones addicted, and they’ll sell just about anything to fund their habit, including their own children.

An unwed couple in China are currently in jail awaiting trial after they sold not one, but both of their sons in order to be able to buy items in their favorite free-to-play online games. The first son was not a planned pregnancy and the father did not want to pay for his upbringing, so they decided to sell him to a child trafficker. Typically these children are then sold on to Chinese couples wanting a child, to orphanages for sales overseas, or even to street gangs!

It gets worse, though, because they got pregnant again and because the selling of the first child worked out so well, they decided to do it again. Only this time, the grandfather on the father’s side reported the sales to the police. Now both are facing long prison sentences.

The online gaming addiction looks to be a problem mainly of the father, who regularly stays out all night playing at Internet cafes. But that doesn’t really say much for the mother who was clearly very happy for her children to be sold.

Based on the behavior of these two individuals, you could argue they did the kids a favor selling them. But that’s only going to be true if they ended up as the children of a well-off Chinese couple and not stuck in an orphanage or gang.

I've heard about similar things where the first born girls are killed or sent away. The men-to-woman ratio over there is insane. You have to have a super high paying job to stand a chance of getting a wife. Ironically, don't they favor having boys because of the 1 child policy?

Overall it's just a bad place to live.

To get a woman you need to show case yourself and tell how much you earn and what not. Its very hard to get a woman in china. I think the extra child gets sent to the army or something like that not sure. As for the first born girls No they don't get killed not sure if they get sent away just they have more men than woman there.

Actually a lot of baby girls are killed or dumped on the streets. The problem is that families want boys to carry the family name and until recently were viewed as superior to girls. Thankfully though China is relaxing it's policy. If the first child is a girl then they are allowed a 2nd child.

Funny irony though is that this has worked wonders for gender equality. Because parents don't have to worry about a future for their daughter (husbands job), they can spend more money on education for their daughters. Thus woman in china are better educated and since they are few relative to men it's easier for them to climb the social ladder by marrying a rich man. Plus with only one child woman can still hold a job and advance in their career whilst caring for a family. So basically when fathers tell stories of their children, little Billy is still working daddies farm with no wife but neibouring Susan has moved to the city with a fancy degree and rich husband. She can better care for her family than Billy who was the preffered option to look after his aging parents.

I just cant get over how you sell your child, hand over your blood and take money...then again, same goes for parents that abuse their children.
The high point in my day is when I get home, my 4 year old son hears me at the door and runs to hide. lol, not out of fear, but its a game. Not hard to find him, just follow the giggles. They just want love and attention.
It boggles my mind how ppl can be so cruel. On the other hand, hopefully, someone willing to pay for a child should care and love the child. Then again, a third side, sex trade.... good Lord.... my mind boggling.... this world. bleh
