Cant believe the price with the added kinect... the brittish price increases by roughly R600, and ours goes up by R1 700.00... makes perfect sense...

Confirmed then that we are getting screwed. Considering the fact that MS are not buying these at $399 but paying production costs. Considering the fact that our average salaries on South Africa are way less than those of the UK and US. Considering the fact that even if you do add US Sales tax (between 0-10% depending on the State you live in) it still comes way, way higher. It doesn't hold much hope of MS catching up with Sony in South Africa. This could have been a great opportunity for MS South Africa to take a little less profit, and claw back some lost market share. Instead they tow-the-greed line. Very sad.

Oh crap... That's what we get for living at the bottom of the poorest continent...

Define poor? Africa is quite a bit richer than quite a lot of other countries. It's just badly managed and ill equipped.

Consoles and games are imported from the EU/UK, not the US. We can't compare the US prices to ours, or any other country.

Part of this is purely volume based I.e. When you sell hundreds in South Africa and tens of thousands in other markets, the costing will in most cases be more favorable for where the volume is higher.
