/*I didn't think this belonged in the gaming PC section.

With some help from my brother, I shall be getting a laptop for my mother, hopefully as a Christmas present.

The Netbooks with the 8 inch screens may be a little too small for her, but a 15 inch screen ought to be about right.

The machine needs to have a webcam for Skype as she intends to talk to my sister overseas.

We can spend a maximum of R7000 on this machine.

Any suggestions?

Thank you/

Try a HP Compaq 615 laptop. They go for about +-R6k depending where you look.
15.6" Screen
2gb Ram
HD3200 ATi gphx card
Wireless
0.3MP camera

My dad's got one. Its' very nice laptop :)

It's a good laptop, nothing fancy. That price comes with the OS though soooo youll likely want to put something else on

oh nothing wrong with the OS. Just that R6K price is the OS included which is more than likely Vista. If you can live with that then it's all ok

Hmmm.....and we don't really want that running on a relatively inexpensive
laptop now, do we.

Vista is supposed to be slow, right?

They should offer a choice of operating systems.

I dunno what that pc shop is like, you'll have to ask them. My theory is you should get it with Win7 when you decide to buy it :) It's very good OS

Oh I know....I'm running the 64 bit edition. :)

Now that my brother has offered to help pay for it, it is likely that we will be getting it for her for Christmas, by which time laptops should be shipping with Win 7, shouldn't they?

Must just remember to place an order for ADSL in October or thereabouts.

ADSL router will probably be a Dlink 2640U [need it to be wireless]

Out on October 22nd :)

Fortunately I still have until early next year to save for the cheapest version of win7 which will work for me.

Yeah you'll most definitely want to get a laptop with Windows 7 to save her unnecessary likely future frustration :)

I'll never look back! *bursts into Never Turn Back by Ben Moody*

I saw the VitalityMall run a nice special on a HP laptop, for R4500 or something like that. You need to be part of Discovery Medical Aid and have the Vitality benefit, to make use of this special though.

I prefer my DELL laptops still - They have never failed me, the price is great and the support even better!

for what you getting it's a damn good price :)
DELL is great if you can afford the price tag that comes along with it...
