The Plight of the SA Twitch Streamer

Hi guys

Myself and two friends have created a Twitch channel called PronkTV and we've discovered just how difficult it is to just get it up and running.

First and foremost, internet speeds. With streaming, it's not about how fast you can download; you can have a top of the line 20mbs uncapped line, but that doesn't mean you're going to be able to make a quality stream. Upload speeds are more important and all our ADSL uncapped internet, even the fastest, is limited to less than a 1mbs upload thanks to Telkom. Their switches haven't been upgraded to handle more than 1mbs. How fast does it need to be to stream at 720p you ask? 1.8mbs is the answer. And then you still need some headroom to be allocated to whatever game you're playing if it needs an internet connection, ie. Battlefield 4.

We have found a solution in the new wireless services which have been popping up, but we've also found them to be quite a headache to use. We currently get 8mbs down and 6mbs up which is awesome at face value, but then we have to pay for each GB we use which makes it pretty expensive, especially when streaming averages about 1GB per hour in bandwidth. And then there is the incompetence of the service provider. You firstly need to pay for a dish to be installed which beams the signal from a tower near your house. I can't tell you how many times we've had connection problems and very low speeds for days and weeks at a time. Their service departments are incredibly frustrating to deal with and often they blame you for the problems you're having. We've also been spammed through the towers with LinkBucks adware which is almost impossible to get off your PC and smartphone once it's there.

With Telkom just announcing that their fibre optic internet is launching soon, we got excited for a moment and then very disappointed. 100mbs line but only in certain rich areas and at a cost of R7000pm, who in their right minds would pay that?!

Anyways, the point of this post is to find out if anyone else is also streaming and if they've found a better solution? We haven't been able to find any other South Africans on Twitch, so we may be the first. Would also be great to hear your thoughts on the matter. Hopefully South Africa catches up to the rest of the world, as doubtful as that looks right now.

GlacieredPyro streams some Diablo and Hearthstone from time to time, and he seems to be doing fine with the streaming technicalities. He is FirestarterZA on Twitch. I think he is using some sort of FTTH solution, 10mbps if I]m not mistaken.

Good luck in getting up and running though. Unfortunately we are a country not yet ready for live game streaming I feel.

I must admit i have wondered why more SA guys dont stream... Then again im not sure how many SA people actually watch the streams, so is there really a market for it? Iv recently started watching a bit of Twitch, more out of curiosity than anything else...

Whats the wireless solution you guys have gone with? Have you looked into Bitco? They have a 99% guaranteed uptime, with great Download and upload speeds... Maybe check them out? They will come and install the "dish" and all that free of charge with a 2 year contract if im not mistaken... And if they have coverage in your area obviously....

General South Africans have not yet embraced internet video streaming as a full blown alternative to TV, which is why South African Youtubers and Twitch streamers are not yet as popular and big as their international counterparts. The people that actually view is a really small amount compared to other countries. This will make it much more difficult for SA streamers and Youtubers to make it big. But it's not impossible.

What must also be a HUGE problem is actually getting an audience... I mean i know when i think of watching some streams i immediately go for the most well known guys, like Kripparian for eg, and he's been around for years...

Iv canned my DSTV in favor of other "alternatives"... And i can safely say im extremely happy with the decision...

Hey man,

Sounds like you are using BitCo there.
I'm using smartvillage 10Mb.

It's an expensive thing to get but luckily it's uncapped.
I've taken lot's of time to ensure my bitrates are good for fast action games like diablo and a seperate setup for hearthstone. The big thing is to ensure that you viewers are able to watch your stream. So 720 is fine until your channel gets transcoding from Twitch.

BF4 is fast paced and as you said needs more bitrate than something like hearthstone. Had you streamed something slower you would be able to get away with much less bandwidth.

Thanks we will check out Bitco, don't really want to name and shame the ISP we're with now, but it's quite a small one right now.

As far as audiences go, we try aim for US times which helps. We try stream every Saturday from 3pm till the early hours of sunday morning. We did have another channel called Drunken_Shibes which got us over 400 views in 2 weeks, but we decided to change the name to something more appropriate. You also have to be strategic about what you stream. Like streaming BF4 and LOL is just pointless cuz there's so many people doing it, you're going to be right at the bottom of the list with no viewers. So you have to aim for games which don't have many people playing them. Unturned for instance is a game which gets us a lot of views. American girls also love our accents so that helps haha.

You also can't just play and think that's going to be interesting for people to watch. I can't watch more than 2min of a channel like that. So we have a webcam set up on us and we try to make it entertaining and talk a lot. You hold more viewers by getting them involved in the chat than by actually playing the games.

It would be great to get more South Africans watching us and engaging though, I will say that

I checked out Bitco, they are uncapped so that's great, but it's still R1500pm and the upload is only 2mbs which I'm not comfortable with. I want at least 4mbs cuz we also hold Skype calls on top of streaming and gaming. Need as much as possible

Well I usually watch streams while playing so I will be sure to stop by when y'all go live.
Changing the name is going to set you back a ton though. Biggest thing for me to work on is to stay engaging and keep talking even when chat is dead. Which is most of the time when you start out.

We could also colab live some time which may be fun.

Sweet thanks man! I have given your channel a follow already, we should definitely do a colab sometime.
And yes staying engaging is very important which is why it's great to have 3 of us in the room at once. Plus we add a bit of alcohol in there to keep the conversation fun haha. We did our first stream over the weekend on PronkTV and got 80 views in the first 4 hours and some people chatted quite a lot with us which was awesome

Holy shit.

That is some seriously good viewership off the bat.
There is massive growth potential for you guys. Keep at it. Stick to the schedule. Can't wait to see you get big.

That sound like a very interesting stream. I'll give you a follow as well. And I'm with you, I can't watch a streamer that just sits and playes games without interacting for too long. It gets boring.

Thanks, yeah we were very surprised. Growing faster than our previous channel. But we've learned a lot from it and it seems to be working quite well in our favour. Hopefully we can make Twitch partner soon and start making some money off it. I'll check you out next time you stream

Thanks man, much appreciated. Yes, looking at the other more popular channels, you can see why they're so popular and it isn't for their "awesome gameplay". Just hope we can get some decent internet in this country cuz we're very limited in how often we can stream by that

Hey GlacieredPyro, I'm Jaba from PronkTV. I like the sound of this live colab and I think we should definitely do it. Give us a follow on @PronkTV so we can keep you informed of our stream times etc. Us SA streamers gotta stick together!

Hey Glacier, Tried searching, but couldn't find anything, maybe you want to create a SA Twitch streamers topic so we can follow the guys that are streaming and be up to date with times etc? If there is already a topic could you point me to it?

That is an awesome idea. Could we get an admin to sticky that too? Tom, if you're searching for us on Twitch, Glacier's channel is called FirestarterZA and ours is PronkTV

I think it would be good to have such a topic as there is none yet it seems.
Will see if I can get around to it.
