Destiny - Give us your thoughts

Hello all,

With Destiny launching on 9 September 2014, a review of the game was scheduled to be published in the coming days.

Due to the nature of Destiny, though, it will be difficult to assess the game from a single perspective only. Besides that, the various classes and areas mean one person alone will be playing for hours on end just to scratch the surface.

So, I would like to ask all MyGaming readers and forum members who get the game (and obviously play it) to drop in any comments or thoughts on Bungie's new project, in this thread.

Whether it is a few words, or a Master's thesis, let us know what you think of the game.

We will let the thread run for a couple weeks, then put a piece together based on your views. "What MyGaming readers think of Destiny" or something like that.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Kevin

PS: I have pre-ordered my copy so will definitely be adding to the thread.

I'm going to wait for a PC possible version, I don't like playing fps with a controller when there's a better way to do it. :(

Sure thing, gimme a while to adjust. Unfortunately I can't call in sick as they know it's coming out. (yes, our office is filled with gamers).
Assume you getting PS4 version Kev?

Yes, PS4 version for the win - waiting as we speak for Kalahari to ship it.

Some of friends have already started playing it now (from like 6) but haven't gone past the point they were in the beta yet.. I haven't heard any complaints from them yet so I'm guessing they're enjoying it

@Kevin - I dunno if this is something a MyG rep would be preferred to do. But maybe we can set up a MyGaming Clan/Group for Destiny?!

I'm sure this will make arranging for Raids or Strikes easier.

I think that is a cool idea - I will see what we can do in a MyGaming capacity. And if anyone wants to use this thread to set up their own clans, feel free.

As a side, I am still waiting for Kalahari to deliver my copy of the game.

Wow that is bull...I wonder if some people from takealot also have the same experience? I know one of my friends that got his yesterday morning...but forgot to ask where he ordered from.

Unfortunately I can only buy mine end of the month anyways...too poor atm :(

Please note: The Xbox360 version of Destiny requires a HardDrive in order to install/play.
You will not be able to install the game without one. (ie. if you have the Xbox 360 Arcade 4GB version).

The game is blast to play Bungie really nailed the gunplay, the graphics are good but you can see cross gen had an affect. The soundtrack is amazing the story reminds me a bit of Diablo 3.Playing with friends is awesome. It is avery solid game 8.5 out of ten.

My thoughts and opinions.

As someone who has never played or seen a Halo game before. I can sense why there is such a vast community surrounding the Halo franchise. The game just screams pedigree. It's clear Bungie know what they are doing, the controls and gun play are so fluid and smooth. This coming from someone who, as a general rule, does not play FPS games with a controller. This being my first FPS on console, the aiming came almost naturally and didn't struggle too much, which was quite pleasant and very refreshing.

Of course the game is not without it's ups and downs. I think the biggest and probably the worst crux is the story and the repetitiveness of the missions. The story is very meh and uninspiring, just pretty generic. Then there's the missions, go here, do this, face waves of enemies and a boss then repeat. It get's a bit long in the tooth.

Now this is the part that I really love and enjoy. The co-op, I find to be extremely fun and best when played with friends. Whether just patrolling the open(ish) world or taking part in Strike or Raid missions. It can also be a bit repetitive, but it's almost intuitive and people tend to know what the other wants without any voice coms. Towards the end of these missions though you fight a boss, which all you really need to do is pump loads of rounds into it for about 10min before it falls.

The Crucible, I don't excel very much at, the PvP environment! I shudder at the word and I guess it's mostly due to my noobness in the FPS genre on console, but I do enjoy it and it has a nice mix of modes and adds variety.

There ain't that much to talk about in the loot section. You don't pick half the shit you would get in Borderlands. But the customization options available in weapons and armor is a nice addition and different way of doing things. Customizing your play-style the way you see fit to your chosen class. I find it very gratifying. I can't wait to reach level 20.

To sum up, there is something special about this game, despite it sounding a little boring from what I've stated. Something that keeps pulling you back. The word that comes to mind is polished. The world is amazingly beautiful (at least on PS4). And the character models are amazing. This game doesn't make me want to rush home after work and play. I mean I haven't even touched it tonight. But it is something that makes you want to continually return to on occasion.

Though there is one thing, I feel an emptiness after playing Destiny. The fact that I have never played a Halo game before, begs me to wonder what they were like. If Bungie put this much work and effort into Destiny, I can only imagine. In fact, I will go as far to say that I am seriously considering picking up an Xbone, just to get and play The Master Chief collection. And that alone my friends has to stand for something!

I have not had much time lately to play but I am pleased with what I have played so far.

My opinion is that many people will find it shallow, grindy and boring. It's focus is Raids, pvp and Gear aquisition - it is a mmo after all.
I do feel that Bungie did not put the campaign high up on the to do list when making Destiny but with constant DLC's that are to start arriving in December and the 'card' system it should start to add a lot to the some what lacking story.

Gunplay is smooth, abilities feel as powerful as they look and AI (on hard) is quite crafty and gives a good challenge.

Just played for about 20 mins before having to switch of and go to bed. So far.... Meh. Intro robot is bland and infinitely less charming than Claptrap. Main thought while playing is that Borderlands was better in every possible way. Hope it gets better real quick.

Probably one of the best write ups I've read about Destiny.

He strikes every nail on the head and sums it up nicely.

Destiny is a mediocre game with a lot of problems, and I can't stop playing.
The game is deeply flawed, and the Polygon review lists all the places it stumbles much better than I ever could, but I still find myself locked into the world's almost impersonal embrace way after the game's charms should have worn off....
