Classic PC games that went free

The Urquan Masters! :D Best game I ever played... The sense of epicness to the games was truly amazing.
Exactly! I played it again a few months ago and it's still as epic and awesome as ever. I heard rumours about a "true" successor, not the rubbish that was Star Con 3

I was kinda hoping Star Citizen would be something like it, but I guess not. Just imagine an enormous galaxy to explore, alien races to meet, duels with spaceships that you can win for your fleet and possibly an MMO flavour thrown into the mix... Al done in a modern graphics engine! I'd play it for years on end. Sounds kinda like Eve. :p

Also a big fan of Ur Quan Masters. Even got the HD edition.
Unlike most people, I actually even enjoyed Starcon 3.

As for the "true" successor, there was Project6014 but there doesn't seem to be much happening with that. Stardock has however purchased the rights for Star Control and they're getting input from the original creators from Toys for Bob in making a new Star Control game. I think I created a thread about that earlier this year somewhere.

Red Alert looks HORRIBLE!!!! "whistling:

Spent many many hours running through Wolfenstein... What a great game...

Funny enough, I found the old C&C games aged quite well... Dune, one the other hand, didn't. The single unit-select-action made it laborious to take over a base. C&C redefined the genre with the box-drag-to-select and assign teams to numbers gameplay. It was simple, but challenging to finish the game. I still love it to this day!

FPS shooter Area 51 also went free - although it's not what I'd call a classic and it definitely did not age well at all.
