Radeon R9 290 vs Geforce 970

Hi guys

I stupidly bought a Radeon R9 290 just over a week ago, not realising the 970 is releasing. My question is, I can return the 290, less 10% handling (about R600), BUT...

Does anyone think it's worth it to do so, and then get the 970? (so I'll end up paying around R6600 for it).

Seems to me the 970 outperforms the 290 in benchmarks, but that doesn't always mean real world performance gains.

Current setup is MSI 990 MB, AMD 8150 CPU, 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM, Gigabyte R9 290 OC, 128GB SSD and 1TB secondary HDD.

Take it back and get it swapped.
The GTX970 is faster than a R9 290 and on par with a R9 290X, it uses less power, produces less heat and comes with quite a bit of new tech. I would personally take the R600 knock. Also don't sell it on Carbonite, you'll get R50 and a half eaten pack of simba chips.

I don't think you'll see an actual difference in performance between the two cards. The biggest advantage the 970 has is the far lower power draw (about 30% less), so it runs a lot cooler and therefore quieter.

Stranger danger!

Listen to this man, he toys with GPUs daily. On the Carbonite front, AFAIK the market is flooded with AMD GPUs post Bitcoin mining, so the secondhand market is highly competitive. Swap it out for the 970 and enjoy the PhysX...

Thanx mate.

Yeah unfortunately the market is flooded with AMD cards due to the mining epidemic.
The GTX970 is a really special card, Nvidia did something amazing. I don't doubt for one second that AMD won't be able to compete with it but they are only planning on launching their next range of cards next year if rumors are true.

The R9 290 is an amazing graphics card, but the GTX970 is a much better gpu.
I'll be getting my hands on some tomorrow but from what I've seen so far it completely crushes the R9 290.

Benchmarks = real world gains. 970 is a stunning card for the P/P ratio and the TDP. If you can afford it, it's an obvious decision to make. Joker is spot on as always with this stuff.
