I'll say this, you have NO FSKING CLUE until you have one of your own!

I'm not going to say too much and I could ramble here for ages, but don't take that above comment too directly, it was a general statement.
Also, no option for both?

you can choose both but no, no 'both'. Whats your reason for preference of kids?

I love animals, don't get me wrong. And I love my son! It's just different. They hold different values in this world.

I had a dog, which was given to me when I was 6 (I think) and he was my bestest friend. I had to have him put down when I was in matric. THE hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life! But you come to terms with it and move on.

The loss of a child, I cannot even begin to comprehend. I cannot fathom moving on or coming to terms with something like that. Not to mention that you would do anything for that child, I would kill or be killed for my child!

I can't say I'd die for my dog. Though I loved him dearly.

Honestly When I am on my own I would rather have neither. Can't travel the world easy if you have a kid or an animal(not fair on the animal if you travel for a few weeks.)

I love my 2 sons and i would not trade them for anything in the world, i have 2 dogs too sausage dogs :p but i would keep my kids any day no matter what

Animals cannot compare to children.

Each have their own unique role.

Animals: you feed, love and play with; medicate when necessary.

Children: more taxing, greater care needed. More love, time and affection is given. They grow up - and that is a beautiful thing to bare witness to.

If you do not wish for too much responsibility - have a pet. Otherwise, a child is simply a different and better ball game.

To conclude: I'd have either, or both. Depends on circumstances.

My wife and I decided not to have kids. Yay for us! :D

*upgrades computer and buys Oculus Rift* ;)

*edit*

We've got a cat and a dog though and will get more in the future. So definitely animal people over here.

Unless your kid becomes a complete fuck up that steals from you and puts you into debt that you can't get out of.
Honestly it good people love their kids but that whole You don't understand till you have one kinda pisses me off.

I'd choose both since I have both. Both are awesome but there is nothing more demanding and rewarding than being a parent.

Funny story, when my wife and I attended antenatal classes before the birth of our first, one of the wives joked that she was worried her husband would love the baby more than her. Especially since she had seen the way he is with their dogs.

...but the thing is, you CAN'T understand the bond a parent and child have until you have your own. Knowing that that person is half of your own being, your flesh and blood, is a feeling nothing else can compare to. Literally nothing, as you can't sire or birth a car or computer or anything else.

I love my dog to bits (she's alnost like a child) and grieved for a week when I had to put my 2 year old Yorkie down 3 years ago, but I really want to have children in the next couple of years. Having partly raised our niece, we know how quickly a child creeps into your heart, even if it's not yours.

So from me: child without a doubt.

But still I honestly don't ever want a child. I basically raised my brother yes I love him with all my heart and we share a great bond but it doesn't mean I want a kid. I don't want to raise a kid in the world we living in at the moment not to mention with my career choice not knowing when his dad is going to come back from his next tour of duty.

That's your choice and opinion and I respect that, but please don't diss someone like Beo's comment if you can't relate. The old adage rings true: don't knock it till you've tried it.

Raising a sibling is a completely different experience to raising a child - there's a reason child headed households require all the support they can get. A child isn't supposed to look after another child. That's the responsibility of the parents or foster parents. Again, I respect and admire you for raising your bro, but it can't compare to your own child.

Some say the meaning of life is to pass on your legacy and I quite agree with that. If we don't pass on our genes to a new generation, who will be left to carry on our species? What value will wealth and knowledge be if you can't pass on an inheretance?

Thats just ego. I don't like that whole don't knock it before you try it. With that logic you can say don't knock drugs till you try it or don't knock murder until you try it. I see a lot of people having kids for selfish reasons(not aiming at anyone here)Or having them for the sake of having them. And as for the meaning of life there is no meaning. It just is.

Those last two sentences...
