Fist of Jesus

Gay isn't a religion, it's a personal preference... arguably, so is religion.

Mocking a sexual preference can be seen as rude and targeting a certain-sized audience, but mocking a religion targets a greatly larger group than that of sexual orientation or preference.

Edit: I don't even know why I'm in such great defense about all of this. Let the game mock (if it really so desires); I just won't play it.

And I see someone who lacks insight and who do not respect other people. I gave exact reasons as to why Christians find this game offensive. Why can't you respect them? Because you don't understand them? Because you don't agree with them?

Just because you don't agree with their religious views does not mean that they won't find a mockery of their deity offensive.

You tell them to grow a sense of humour and tell them that it's alright to mock their deity even if it goes against their scripture. Their very beliefs.

You are intolerant.

Personally I find it shocking how someone with his history can be so intolerant of other people.

Uh-huh. Saying something doesn't make it so. I'm pretty tolerant of many things, including religion. What I'm not tolerant of is people jumping on their high horses and rushing to be offended by silly nonsense. You continue to insist that this is a mockery of your religion. I don't agree. What do you want me to do? Say "it's okay, you be offended all you like dear little boy"? And then what? Every time someone finds something offense we censor the crap out of it?

If I think you're being overly sensitive, I'm going to say it. I'm criticizing you. It's not an attack or criticism on your religion. Get that out of your head and stop looking for reasons to play the poor little martyr card.

Personally I find it shocking how someone with his history can be so intolerant of other people.

Personally I find it shocking how someone with a tag saying "Perpetually Politically Incorrect" can spend so much time whining over perceived political incorrectness.

I'm only going to reference this thread because I'd say there are some similarities; The Bible makes a comeback. Now, the actual article itself wasn't what caused commotion in that thread, it was rather the jokes shared by some of the myg members, and the jokes struck a negative chord with some of the other myg members.

Here are some of my thoughts that I shared in the thread (they may earn some ire among the peeps here because of their grey area nature), I share them because I still kind of feel the same way about "offense":

My 2 cents (This is a trap isn't it:p):

The truth of the matter is that any topic (and I mean literally) has the potential to offend people, so that raises the question of where the line should be drawn between what's acceptable and what isn't.

With that in mind, who has the authority to define where the line should be drawn? And whosoever deemed that person's opinion of where the line should be drawn as valid?

Another question that comes to mind is why does anyone who is offended by religious, racial, or political jokes, even jokes about state of health, and jokes that cover every other topic, have any more right than anyone else in the list to have that specific topic off-limits?

Who decides that? Anything can offend anyone. That's because we're all different people (past 7 Billion not too long ago), and that's fair enough. But if one topic is off limits, we may as well stop talking or joking because there is no reliable scale to determine which topics should get preference in terms of tip toeing.

Unless of course you've never made a joke or discussed any topic, then maybe you're that one truly objective person who has the authority to draw the line

Personally, I'm a Christian, but those jokes didn't offend me because I took them as banter in the same I way I take racial banter, in the same way some homosexuals take their dose of banter, even some blondes, some gingers, some paraplegics, etc. Why? because, it plainly doesn't affect me or them or suddenly change my outlook on anything...

Who has the authority to draw the line, that's all I ask you?

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not going to play devil's advocate or angel's defense by saying it is or isn't offensive because that's neither here nor there for me personally. What I will say, having seen the gameplay (looks boring, to be honest), is that it is, I guess, riding on the coattails of the buzz (negative or otherwise) generated by the name and the movie it's based on.

Also, Hagan, I kindly ask you to consider the implications and suggestions you make when you make comparisons such as the one you did in a previous post.

A PSA to anyone who hasn't realised this yet: Graal has been goading folks into this debate for the first 5 pages of this thread (if not more).

If you rise to the occasion, don't come running to me if it gets ugly.

If it gets very ugly, it is likely that everyone involved will have infractions coming their way. What I want for MyGaming is a place a civil discourse about an art form we all love. When arguments become personal, my experience is that they are no longer constructive:

Treading into personal attack territory there. Keep the arguments civil, please.

Say "it's okay, you be offended all you like dear little boy"? And then what? Every time someone finds something offense we censor the crap out of it?

I don't see anyone in this thread calling for censorship.

I haven't mentioned anywhere that it's my religion. You keep assuming it. You'll also find that I haven't criticised the game at all. You'll also find that I haven't mentioned anywhere that I'm offended. Yet you keep assuming so.

You don't agree that it's a mockery of Christianity. But I logically explained that it is.

1. Does the game portray Jesus in a derogatory way? Yes. It was done intentionally.
2. Does the game portray the Christian deity in a derogatory way? Yes. According to the Christian religion Jesus is seen as part of the Holy Trinity. The Christian deity.

What does the word "offensive" mean? http://www.thefreedictionary.com/offensive
In particular: "Causing anger, displeasure, resentment, or affront".

The reason why Christians find the game offensive is because it portrays the Christian deity in a derogatory way.

I also gave a definition to the word "mock" because it still doesn't look like you understand what it means.

I haven't got time to elaborate on this now. I do think we need to respect people and their religions. Something which I do not believe that you do.

Apologies Jan, I only saw your post after I posted mine. I will stop now.

I'm happy for the discussion of what may or may not cause people to take offence to continue. All I ask is that ya'll not make things personal.

That said, here's my take on the game based on my 0 hours of playtime: obvious marketing tactic that banked on people taking offence to generate some free publicity around it. (Which we happily oblige with, of course, because the discussion around it is always interesting while it remains civil.)

Also: needs more dinosaurs. Specifically raptors.

I get the sinking feeling you may have had a look at the thread I linked :p

It did start like wild fire :-/

It's by far the most civil forum I've ever been on. That's why I'm still here.

Na-aaaah. I've been part of a Christian Metal forum for nigh on 10 years and it's civil as hell... Or, heaven in this case. That being said, the forum's not all that active anymore... About 10 posts a week.

The commando forum I am involved with is a lot more friendly than here.
