Witch Hunter Robin (not everyone's taste - it's a little slow at points, but dark atmosphere etc)
Black Cat (if you haven't seen it yet - worth a watch)
Gunslinger Girl (mix of action and cuteness - but very strong emphasis on characters)
Cowboy Bebop (you've probably seen this one already)
Speed Grapher (was a little wierd, but a good watch anyway - gets violent at stages)
Gantz (also very out there, and plenty of violence tho - not the best ending I've ever seen though)
Canaan (haven't seen yet - but it's on my list of to-watch anime)
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ (some similarities to Black Lagoon - but much darker)
Noir (again, not to everyone's taste, a little slow, female leads, plenty of gun action)

For some less serious options (they have action as well, but stronger focus on comedy):

Strike Witches

I haven't seen Occult Academy yet, so can't really give any similar suggestions there.

Hmmm ... well ... not entirely sure what you've seen so far - so let me know of any particular series that you saw or liked along those lines and I'll see what I can come up with in terms of recommendations.

Off the top of my head - I'd recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni + Kai + Rei, and then Umineko no Naku Koro ni. They're both horror/psych thriller types. Dance in the Vampire Bund is another one that might be worth watching.
