Ummm ... Psyndrome ... I'm having difficulty understanding you - either I'm really, really stupid, or you are just flat contradicting yourself.

Even the video you posted says the answer is 288.

As Prometheus said:

And then there's:

Yes, I was wrong so I posted the video after I made my statement.
Sorry forgot to mention that. Answer is 288.

Well, at least it is now resolved. The answer is 288. I was getting worried to be honest this might well have set off WW3.

Easy. BOMDAS.

Brackets first ... 12

Multiplication next ... 2*12

Division next ... 48 / 24

= 2

:p

I dont understand the english words for explaining maths. I did it all in Afrikaans. But at the end of the day the answer is very clear , its 2. The divide figure thing (deel syfer) seperates the numbers. So no matter what *som* is written, you do that first on each side before dealing with the dividing cypher. For instance 1(1+2) + 3(3-1) means 1(3) + 3(2) and that means 3 + 6 and equals 9. And 48/2(9+3) = 48/2(12) = 48/24 = 2. Whether its plus , multiply or dividing, its still the same.

Oh wait I just saw the catch to the whole thing. That the brackets should be seen as a multiply sign. Well this is a stupid question anyway *walks away*

I agree, the answer is 2.

It's a straight forward sum. As Lycanthrope mentioned earlier, BODMAS. You always work out the numbers within the brackets first.

What did you do with the brackets?
They multiplied the 2 into the brackets instead of treating it as (48/2)*(9+3) or, better written:
MSP112619fg1acbah60962e00004ififh8813b646dc.gif

Basically, they're multiplying the 2 into the brackets to give them 24 and then dividing 48 by 24.

Basically, to get 2, they're reading the equation as:
MSP70319fg1ag6b2a1fd2500002e35fied8c30gc16.gif

or as: 48/(2(9+3))

Which is incorrect.

Since it's ambiguous, it's not really a math question. More like a logic question for what answer would "machine x" give and since the "machine" isn't mentioned, you don't have a set of rules to follow.

Thus it's an invalid question. But if I assume it's for a calculator then the answer is 288.

A casio should give you the right answer, but if you use the windows calculator your gonna have to rewrite the formula to:

48 / 2 * 12

/ and * would take priority from left to right. Brackets obviously first, but when it's used it can be removed and replaced with a *

You can actually see it's not a well formed formula by trying to enter it actually as is in the windows calculator.
You'll get:
48 / (9+3)
instead of
48÷2(9+3)

and thus the wrong answer of 4
