yeah but u can swap M/D and A/S so how u know to divide or multiply first lol

Multiplication and division is in the same order but when it's both it's from left-to-right.

How'm I doin'? :p

Edit: You know what? Screw trying to rationalise this. Excel confirms it's 288 so I'ma go away nao before I embarrass myself :D

Brackets then multiply then divide, that is the order. You need to eliminate the brackets first, hence multiply by 2 to get rid of brackets then divide.

Well, bearing in mind that I'm no mathematical adept here. I've LONG ago forgotten much of what mathematics I was taught at school and am just hazarding a guess at what I can recall. It might be right, it might be wrong :p

Although, I'd like someone to explain the how/why of their conclusion to me. I've got the order of operations on my side... I think :p

This should be read like this:

48
--- * (9+3)
2

if it was

48
------------
2 * (9+3)

2 and (9+3) would have to be in brackets as well, like this:

48/(2*(9+3))

So, as Ly says, go from left to right when dealing with both multiplication and division.

Agreed, if Multiply and divide are both there, from left to right is correct, but this is 48/2(9+3). First you work inside the brackets (9+3)= (12) note still in brackets. Now next you need to get rid of the brackets so 48/2(12)= 48/24

The final answer is 48/24=2

haha. I'm assuming that everyone posting in this thread are grown men who completed matric ?? lols
The answer is 2. According to my Casio, my logic and after coaxing excel to do maths the way was intended ...

KnowYourMeme to the rescue!

We're being trolled :p

Regardless, according to what the Meme calls "standard order of operations" it would be... 288. I'ma stick to standard order of operations and insulting bad form equation! RAWR!

LOL. Waiting for the calculators to be whipped out...

Seriously I still think it should be 288. But it is kinda fun to watch people argue over a simple maths problem that should have been dealt with in school.
