Local EA Origin Store pricing

And it's absolutely ridiculous. R350 standard for games that have been released for R100 obn budget range here yeeeears ago? No thanks, I'll stick to Steam.

Truly useless. Even before they changed their name they never ever, as far as I've seen have good local pricing. The aren't even trying to compete with Steam, it's sad really. Utter waste of time IMO.

And on this topic, sites like Impulse and Direct2Drive aren't much better, restricting most specials to the US and I'd rather not make us of VPN services just to get to them. Steam is truly the best digital distributor in the world right now...

If they insist on maintaining RRP for 2-3yr old games then this stuff will never be popular, however it's still early days and I think EA are going to do a big overhaul of the service BUT only time will tell.

A game that has just released will cost R350-R400 no matter where you buy it.
A game that is however 6 months old, THAT is where things turn ugly.

The article only compares very recent releases. A better comparison would have included older titles which have seen a price drop internationally [and as usual don't pull through to us locally for another 6 months] .

Basically like when Mass Effect 2 got a price drop to R100-R200 , it took 3-6 months to show up in retail stores here at that price. Steam had it at the price already, hence why i bought it there.

Also, i don't know about anyone else, but 80% of my Steam collection was specials. I don't usually buy $60 priced games from steam, unless it's simply not available locally in stores. The advantage of steam is how easy you can monitor and grab specials and save a few bucks. I haven't found it that much of an advantage on 0-day releases when the game is going at full price.

If our local distributors are not asleep and ensure games are in stores when they release internationally, then i'd normally pick the full priced releases up in store instead of Steam.

Ironically i've found quite a few times where local pricing was BETTER than on Steam. If your motto is to shop around you'll be surprised. I remember when AC2 was still going for $40 on STeam and it was like R150 in local stores...same thing is happening now with AC2:Brotherhood.

Dragon Age Ultimate Edition : ±7 months ago

steam* : R 203.23
take2 import UK: R 263
Origin: R 399.99

Why would I want to use Origin when it's clearly a ripoff? Also great example how exclusivity fucks up the gamer, you can only get the DA:UE here via EDM because EA thought it be cool to limit us the pc gamers to their downloader at their pricing.

*not in RSA zone, US zone used.

g2play is selling newly released dungeon siege 3 for 290.87; not all new games is automatically R350+

Obviously EA lost the plot with local pricing but so do a lot of retailers. If this is the problem then just pay US prices. Looking quickly through the list a lot of the titles are actually cheaper than the Steam prices listed here. It's still early so not enough to draw a fair comparison yet.

Personally I think Steam lost the plot with pricing. Manufacturing and packaging were always used as an excuse to hiking prices but the digital equivalent doesn't fare much better. I've seen a number of people complain that there is no advantage over retail and they can always get it cheaper shopping around.

How do we pay the US pricing on Origin? Last time I've checked they auto re-direct you to ZA/RSA if you try to go US...

Consistently more expensive was one if the lines in the article. Origin isn't going to operating for too much longer at these prices. Big ups to local stores for being more competitive on some fronts.

Have you actually used Steam before, at all? I have 61 games on my Steam account with an average cost of R29 (yes I actually worked it out), mostly triple A games.

New games will almost always cost full retail price on digital distro services, especially in the States, because the publishers are forced to do so by big retailers like Gamestop or else risk their games not being sold in stores or poorly promoted.

No-one is really complaining about NEW game prices where you really only find bargins of R20-30 if you look hard, people are complaining about the OLDER games where you can easily find copies for R150-R200 cheaper than what Origin is selling.

Competition is always good, but Origin would have to rival Steam with a number of amazing specials for them to convince anyone to buy from them (at least in RSA).

I'm only waiting for a proper internet package so that I can sink my teeth into Steam specials... :D
