No Man's Sky

This game is a perfect example why gaming studios needs a good PR department. I'm sure these guys are absolutely amazing programmers and developers, but they are NOT cut out for presentation or PR stuff. Like AT ALL!! Just the fact that no one knows what this game is or can do is some of the evidence of it. I've seen a fair few interviews with the dev team, and they all talk a lot about the game without saying anything. And I don't believe it's because they want to keep it a secret, because they are inadvertently hyping the game incorrectly, setting up people to be highly disappointing.

On another note, I'm glad it got confirmed to be coming to PC.

Isn't their PR department doing a great job because they have managed to get the hype so high?

Well they don't have a PR team, they are a small studio of about 12 people iirc.
They hype has been generated from what the game is, not from a game point of view, but from a development perspective. The outstandingly developed and some superb ideas and new ways of thinking have been thrown in there. What they're able to do and generate and how it all works is amazing, I'm surprised no other developers have thought about games in this way. I think I've posted a lot of videos on this in previous posts earlier in the thread if you're interested.

My biggest concern is, if they don't start to put out solid dates and hint to when we'll be getting this, that the game will be massively over-hyped upon release and actually be a flop. Secondly, I think the game is being perceived incorrectly as well as to what exactly it is, I think people are thinking about it all wrong and upon release it's not going to be what they expected or hoped for.

This. This is the reason why I said they suck at PR.

They are truly innovating something spectacular, but people are gonna get it with an idea in mind, and they may be sorely disappointed. This is not what should happen. Luckily some news outlets got some game time with it, and they can give a much more eloquent description of the game. If people make themselves ready for what the game truly is, a lot of disappointment will be spared.

Damn looks really nice, if it's anything like that 18 min gameplay vid i would definetly get it, i tend to like the idea of doing what ever i want in a space game like this. Hope it turns out great

Hmmm.

Seems like a solid concept for a $20 indie. Not so much a AAA game.

In comparison to some AAA titles, I would rather swap prices with them. I would happily pay $60 for this, and gladly pay $20 for some CoD bullshit.

Well I am sold. Sign me up. I am a big Starlancer and Freelancer fan. And this just looks far beyond any of us could want for a space game. Bring on the coldness of the void!

It seems like I wouldn't really get $60 of gameplay out of this, though. I've been saying since NMS went big that it seems like they're selling a concept more than a game and the gameplay video just reinforces that viewpoint. It doesn't seem like there's a lot of depth or variety to gameplay.

I'd love to be proven wrong because god knows we deserve a good space sim, but I have very little faith that this game is going to do anything other than disappoint a hell of a lot of people.

Im still a little confused by what you actually do in this game...

So if im like one of the first people to fly off in a direction and I find a planet, and I name it Toms Planet Will everyone then see it as Toms Planet? And can people then "take" the planet from me? Do you defend it? Can you kill each other?

The game looks really interesting, but i just dont get what you do? Whats the point? :wtf:

from what i hear this is going to be a single player game.. it might have you connect to a online leaderboard where progress and planet names are saved?

also, the point seems to be to upgrade your ship, dodge the people who are chasing you and get to the centre of the galaxy? i might be wrong though.. maybe someone more clued up can verify:)

I believe Keepa34 has it correct. This is my understanding.

The game is single player, though through a persistent online connection which everyone connect to the same "database" or world. You won't see each other but the changes made by people are applied. From my understanding you don't name the planet so much as you discover the planet and it displays who it was discovered by. This a sandbox style game where there is no real point, but they have hinted at getting to the center of the galaxy.
Each system has planets and moons, and a jurisdiction. You're wanted level may increase in that system depending on your interaction there. There is also a periodic table in the game which shows you what you have discovered and different elements can all be combined to make something new. All your discoveries get uploaded to the "database" which is shared to all users and obviously has a direct impact on supply/demand and the markets.

BeoTeK Ok that shed some light on things... I wont say that im still not confused... But definitely less so...

It does take a lot away from the game that its not an MMO but in the same sentence, it creates something completely different... Its basically a huge game of "who can get there first" from what I gather? And not only to get to the center of the Galaxy, but also "who can get there first" to every planet in the system... My first thought is ok so I have to start playing this game AS IT LAUNCHES or i will never get to discover or name anything? And how do you even know where the center of the galaxy is? Like how do you know if you going in the opposite direction? And will some guys just be like, screw it im flying straight to the center?

So many questions about this game... And also will naming in the Beta be carried over to the game at launch? Like, it seems to me that a big draw card here is being the first to find something and "name" it then forever ever amen people will be mining "Tom Stone" (for a lame example) to build something? I dono... Thinking about this game is actually annoying me... lol...

You'll have some people who wanna get there first and see what's there, then you get me who's knit really interested. I just wanna explore. But you'll know where the center is by the galaxy map which shows which systems you're able to jump to or what your ship is able to do.
