No Man's Sky

Hello Games Shows Off More No Man's Sky Gameplay

A few days ago, Hello Games' Sean Murray visited Stephen Colbert to show off No Man's Sky. Now, he's showing off the game on another outlet similarly unaffiliated with video games with The New Yorker.

You can check out the clip below, which differs only slightly from what Murray showed Colbert, but it's uninterrupted here. It's interesting to see more of the game, but it's also interesting to see those outside of the video game industry who possibly aren't fans of video games impressed by what Hello Games is working on.

Regarding No Man's Sky's release date? It's still unconfirmed.

Im going to go out on a whim and say , I think this game will be amazing for a week and then become incredibly boring.

Everyones going to feel like a fool that they hosted this scammer on their show. Procedural generation is nothing new.

Apologies for being overly cynical but this just seems like the OUYA in game form.

I don't want to share your thoughts, but I do. I hope there is much more to the game than going around and tagging creatures and planets. It will be incredibly cool to do at first, but will wear really thin after a short time. Hopefully there is some building mechanic included that lets you build almost on a Minecraft scale. If that's the case, this game will be the best ever.

Also, so far all the planets that has been shown off has looked very much similar. Only some small differences. I hope that there isn't all these quintillion planets that all have grass, trees, mountains and water of different colour. That would be way too similar.

I've gotten a bit skeptical of this game in the past few weeks. Not really sure what, but something just doesn't gel well for me. I hope it's a success though, and I hope I'm wrong

I hope Im wrong too. I've often stepped off the hype-train rather dissapointed in the past.

Yea, even in that interview with Colbert, when he was asked about "will other players be able to see what you look like" , and the answer was in the lines of "you will probably never see any other players" . So it is essentially a single player game with random-generated worlds and mobs . There was once this game, random generated world, and wildlife that would constantly evolve based on your input, options were endless they said , totally unpredictable they said, totally new every time you play they said .....

...it was called Spore and it was pretty boring within a week.

Its kinda by necessity though...new and undiscovered kinda implies that there aren't a bunch of other players running around the planet. ;)

Yea, but it also means even yourself will most likely not find or visit the same planet twice... This might make things a bit too inconsequential, because it will always be new, kinda like walking through random minecraft servers without building anything?

I'd imagine there is a log for you to find them again...I mean if you can name them then presumably it creates a log entry too.

Inconsequential...yup...concerned about that too. In the Colbert vid after the 6th animal name after him it got old...

Perhaps I dont understand, but if the world is persistent, it should be hosted and stored somewhere? Like when he asked about the planet and the size....then the dev telling him its all procedural generated. Sure, it is, I get that, but its got to be stored and loaded from somewhere so that when another player comes around in a 50 years to the same area, it will still be there.

Again, not sure about this, and it is probably listed somewhere, but the procedural generation, giving that he gave a number of planets, is it already generated? Or will it be generated when the game is released. And again, that will have to be hosted somewhere.

You can store the seed. So the world gets generated from the seed every time, making it the same always. At least that's how many rogulelikes and procedural generated games work. There will however be some things that are stored on a server. Like who discovered a planet and well user actions that influence the universe.

VirtualForce - common misconception is that people tend to associate procedural generation as random, where in actual fact this is quite the opposite.

In computing procedural generation is the method of creating data algorithmically rather than manually. In computer graphics it is commonly used for creating textures while in the context of video games it is also used for creating various other kinds of content such as items, quests or level geometry.

And secondly, my understanding is that this world is (and will be) hosted somewhere. Though not the world, but the database. They are able to generate it client side as it's the same mathematical equations that will run on your console or mine and will generate the same result. The only difference is when being connected you will be uploading your findings and namings to an online database source. Also from my understanding is that you can play offline, which I am led to believe that the same can be applied to your local database in the naming convention and only be uploaded to the community resource once connected. How this will affect it if the resource has been discovered I don't quite know.

I just find this game extremely interesting from a programming stand point. I find it extremely fascinating how they're doing this, I have also watched just about every interview and article on them. I for one and extremely looking forward to this game.

Ok, I get what you mean, sort of plainly 2 + 2 = 4 is procedural, but where 2 + <random number generated> = random. (Very simplistic, but just the general idea)

Makes more and better sense about it being done with math now.

VirtualForce - sorry, just reading over that again, it is in no way meant to mock your intelligence but more of an open discussion and generalization. Not directed at you.

The entire game is algorithms and I get what you're saying. BUT, here's the kicker...

but where 2 + <random number generated> = random.

You are entirely correct in saying this, but if I had to take that same equation I would get the same result.

Sorry, yeah, where the random nr being generated by some algorithm. So its not really a random number as in just choose one.

I'm still very keen for No Man's Sky. My biggest worry is if it will be boring and that there just isn't enough to do to keep one interested. I'm keen to see more gameplay videos.
