Sorry. Am excite. Here's the other part of my delivery from the US via the lovely, beautiful, fantastic Mrs Redd.

Sent her with a list of preferred cards, she came back with the Founders Edition saying the BestBuy salesman said it was the only one they had in stock. Not entirely sure if she was conned or not, but I'm not complaining. :)

Now to get it installed and tested. And then to decide what to do with the 970... any suggestions?

Nice mate, congrats. And please provide some performance charts and thoughts.

I got a few mates that may be interested if wanting to sell.

Quick 3DMark test more to check it's being recognised correctly than anything else:

30% - 40% increase pretty much across the board, except for the Physics-related measures curiously. (Could be something dodge with the driver I may or may not have installed properly :))

Will rerun tests tomorrow once I've checked the drivers are okay and see if anything changes.

Use the 970 as a PhysX card ;-)

Yeah, that is peculiar, albeit marginal difference but still. You would think newer tech would surpass the older gen with regards to physics.

But overall quite impressive nonetheless.

The Physics score is the CPU portion of the test. Your CPU was having an off day compared to the last time.

Yeah, could just be a shitty setting.
GregRedd, open up your nVidia control panel, go to the "Configure PhysX" screen (see below example)

Make sure your PhysX processor is set to either "CPU" or your graphics card. If it's set to "Auto Select" you can get odd results during benchmarks.

As I mentioned in my previous post. If you can run both cards on your MB, use the 970 as the dedicated PhysX processor.

Check the below :

Congrats GregRedd, so I guess you saved a lot of money having it brought back for you. Stock of the 1070 and 1080 has been tight in the US, they predicted getting stock levels up by mid august so I doubt the BestBuy saleman was lying.

Rebeltech.co.za have been selling out like crazy but I see the past 2 weeks they've had a range of cards available now.

Yup! That's what I was going to suggest. Here's hoping you got a second pcix slot.

To my understanding the physics portion of 3DMark has nothing to do with PhysX on the GPU. It is designed to load the CPU. If you can offload this test to the GPU via a PhysX setting, I'd be very surprised.

Congrats GregRedd

Maybe all us 1070 owners should start an elitist club where we can complain about snobbish 1080 owners and laugh at the poor plebs that are still rolling with last gen hardware ;)

(I've posted a few thoughts and fps benchmarks in this thread relating mostly to a triple screen setup powered by a 1070 if anybody is interested).

Running a dedicated physx cards these days is a silly idea.
Extra heat and noise for no reason. A GTX1070 is more than capable of dealing with any and everything you throw at it maxed out @1440P. As for price of the 970, Seeing as the 980 is now sitting at R5400 at certain retailers I would estimate around R3500.

Why the 1070 and not the 1080?
As Joker says:

I'm still very much in love with my 27" BenQ monitor, and besides, not even vaguely in the 4K monitor and 1080 GPU disposable cash zone. To be honest, the 1070 is probably borderline overkill as it is.

Thanks for this hint Sweep, and PsychoFish for the suggestion to check the setting in the nVidia Control panel (it was on Auto). These two pointers sparked a realisation that I had run the 970 benchmarks with the CPU overclocked using the MSI Gaming Apps OC Genie tool. When I ran the tests last night it was using the stock clock.

I've just reapplied the OC and re-run the test against the new card, and the revised results make more sense now:

In fact not just the Physics results are better, the other scores also all increased slightly as well.

There you go then. Glad we sorted that out.

It's a beast of a card, by the way. Enjoy it! I take it that is base Fire Strike, not extreme or Ultra?
