A total of 162 drunk drivers have been arrested at nine roadblocks spread throughout Johannesburg ahead of the long weekend, the city's metro police said on Friday.

"One person was arrested for driving a stolen motor car and another whose vehicle was fraudulently registered," said spokesman Wayne Minnaar.

Minnaar said all the arrested would appear in court next week....read more here: 162 drunk drivers arrested

162 Drunk drivers is quite a lot - there probably is more than that :(

Why do people risk their lives by driving drunk??

Yea, the other 500 drunk drivers bribed the cops, or a better way of saying it these days, the cops extorted money out of them.

I think they should stock pile a set of crashed cars outside each testing site for a drivers license. Then when you pass they take you round back to the cars and take you around each car and explain each crash (drunk driver, running a red light and so on).
Maybe showing new drivers the damage in front of them and letting them feel the carnage might help give them some respect for driving.

Its could be similar to salvage yards where dead cars go after a crash, blood on the wheel and the tear marks from the jaws of life, scars from someone careless enough to drink and drive.

Hell even walking around a race track with the shattered glass and damage on the crash barriers is intimidating.

How do you guys feel about making the legal limit 0.00% ?

With the way our police act, I'm gonna say no. Its gonna be so much easier for them to con people out of their money. Hell they just need to pretend they smell alcohol on your breath and your screwed.

If we can't even control things at or current level, how will a stricter limit be enforced. I'm predicting huge abuse by the police and then followed by millions in court cases for improper conduct because I took my cough medicine and mr under-paid policeman saw a gap. You will have to wait an hour before driving after using mouth wash, that doesn't fit into my morning routine.

One problem, people that are drunk don't absorb information the way they should. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if some of them start thinking the smashed up cars are theirs and start a scene because some guy at the roadblock smashed up his car because he had alcohol in his system.

Well, I was in Nelspruit this week / weekend and some of days, even during the day, the traffic police were pulling people over and testing for alcohol. Don't know if it was random or only the "fishy drivers", but I fully support these roadblocks where they test for alcohol and check if vehicles are roadworthy.

Considering I was talking about when you pass your drivers license test I find it shocking how someone can complete their test while intoxicated.
