Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma has declared May 18, the day of the local government elections, a public holiday.

"In terms of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act, 1994, President Jacob Zuma has declared 18 May 2011 as a public holiday throughout the republic," the presidency said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The declaration will enable voters to participate in the local government elections on the day.

"The president wishes all political parties well as they prepare for the elections."

Sauce: 18 May now a public holiday!

Love people who bitch about the state of the nation and then don't go vote.

Yup - if you don't go to vote, you have to go to work on that day imho. Only way to get the day off certified is to show HR your voting stamp.

90% of people just think "Sweet! Day off!"
In my opinion, if you don't vote, you have no right to complain about anything.

It's not an opinion, it's a fact. If you are a constant moaner about everything that is wrong in SA, then make a difference and go and vote. No, "ja but my vote won't make a difference" or "there are too many ANC supporters". Those are kak excuses. Shut up and go vote!

i abso-frigging-lutely HATE! voter apathy, bitch whine and moan about the state the country is in then when the time comes to go vote they tune it doesn't matter it won't help and a whole other list of kak reasons

I say, wake up early, go vote, do a Wimpy cheese griller brekkie and then game the rest of the day! Win in my books. Or as Charlie Sheen would say, Epic Winning!

I chill the whole day - then go in the evening. For the past how many times I've walked straight in and voted within five minutes. Then go grab a beer at the pub :p

Sweet!! Day off!! :D

Ahaha ... no worries ... I'll go cast my vote.

Be fair though ... whether you vote or not - you're paying taxes (regardless of how old you are) to support this country, so moaning's free and fair in my book. Regardless ... saying your vote isn't going to change anything is a little myopic - imagine you don't go vote and then your area goes to the opponents by a single vote.

Scary part is how many people don't pay taxes! And not to pick a fight, but simply paying taxes doesn't really give you a right to moan. Maybe you can whinge about how they spend it, but even so. People need to vote so that the taxes they pay can then be used properly.

Not to get all politicish here the biggest problem in SA is the dilution of our votes. If the opposition in this country truly wanted to make a difference, they would find a way to merge and unify against the party in power. By having 30 or however many there are parties on the ballot come election day simply means that instead of the results being say 58% to winning party and 42% to opposition, we have a 63% winner and the rest divided between 28 other parties. It is a waste of a vote when people vote for these one time parties that only "exist" around election time.

Anyways, go cast your vote and help make a difference.

You pay tax every single time you walk into a shop and buy something :p Where do you think that 14% VAT goes.

this. Exactly what planning to do. luckily have a pretty quiet voting station by us, the last elections there were only a handful of people.

hahahaha, that would be cool. It's a primary school hidden in the suburbs. we went middle of the day - walked in, did the voting process and walked out. Stood behind 3 ppls in que.

My last voting expedition was also quite painless ... I was in and out in 5 minutes flat. And those were the national elections ... not local gov.
