3.5 HDD for media player

Folks,

I have and Asus O!Play Gallery Media player which can take an internal 3.5" HDD (SATA). I've started doing some research but frankly it is all a little bit confusing as to what would be the best suited between Red/Purple/Green/Caviar/Barricuda etc. In my case with more choice comes more confusion - yes my age may be a factor :)

Need your advice as to what HDD would be best suited for this type of system?

Many thanks

For HTPC Drive, get a Green drive with variable RPM. Less noise and heat. May have a little slower initial seek time but it worth the cost in power and heat.

Red/Purple are drives specifically made for massive data networks.
Green is Variable RPM and uses slower and variable speeds to save on power and heat.
Black are the fastest at the cost of heat and noise.

All my external and internal drives (3 internal and 5 external in total) are all green drives, it make take up to 5 seconds to look for something but it's at the cost of the drive lasting longer. It starts off at a faster speed then cruises at a lower one when playing media. it's practically silent unless it spins up again.

My best advice is if u own a smart TV, download Plex for ur computer and TV. Best thing I ever did!

I have a network cable running from my PC to my TV and all content is streamed from my machine. So no need to have a separate HDD media attached to ur tv.

I have PS3 Media Server running on a PC, and stream to the xbox and ps3 from there, works really well.

I was thinking of doin this with my 360, but heard there was some codex issues so didn't bother. Has this since changed?

I haven't had any issues with it and I've had it set up like that for a long time.
