30 Seconds To Mars have been criticised for asking fans to film themselves getting lyrics to the their song 'Do Or Die' tattooed on their bodies in order to appear in a music video for the song.

The US band, fronted by actor Jared Leto, posted a message on their website on Tuesday (July 23) asking for help in making a lyric video for the song, which appears on their latest album 'Love, Lust, Faith + Dreams'. Along with the request are a list of things fans must do in order to have their video qualify for consideration, including close-ups of the area tattooed before, during and after the process. All fans must be filmed saying: "I am the Echelon" before going under the needle and must also explain why they are getting it done.

Fans have criticised the band for their request, with many of the comments underneath the post describing the move as "irresponsible. "I like the band but I don't think this is a good idea at all," says one commenter, while another adds: "Its absolutely irresponsable and probably the worst thing Mars has ever done."

A representative for the band has been contacted by NME but has not commented on the plans for the video.

Earlier this year Enter Shikari's Rou Reynolds criticised 30 Seconds To Mars for charging their fans to meet the band after concerts. Posting a link to a blog which explains how Jared Leto and his band charge fans up to £575 to spend time with them before and after they have played live on their forthcoming US tour, Reynolds wrote that the practice is "exploiting" fans and calling it "madness".

Hmm what do you think about this?

Personally I'm leaning towards 'it's the fans fault if they're that stupid' but I'm not sure if it's irresponsible of the band.

Actually dont really care what the fans want to do if they love a band so much and the band can ask if they want, since it is their music video.

If its true it sounds like the band members are epically full of themselves. Pay to hang out with them? what the actual hell man! They're acting like divas!

This band has always had the air of "I am so much better than you the fan" ...... their shitty sound and that attitude are the 2 reasons I am glad I am not a fan.

Never heard them and probably never will. That said, if their fans are so doff as to follow them to cow-brand themselves, well that's their own bad :p

Well i am sure most prob dont like them, but this song sold me on them. I think its flipping awesome.

I agree, it's all on the fans, what I don't get is some of those temp tattoos look near perfect, so they can still be in the video without permanently marking themselves. but the question is: if I ask people to jump off a cliff, am I at fault, or are the people who actually do it???

Yeah the temp tattoos would cut it I reckon but maybe they would be shunned for not being 'true' fans or something, who knows.

Both the band and the fans are a bunch of dumbasses.
The fans are stupid enough to get exploited like this, by perminantly branding themselves and paying to spend time with this bunch of megalomaniacs.
The band naively thinks they can immortalise themselves by starting a cult. I think they're no better than the Beeb.

OK...

So this band sucks now... a few years back their stuff was awesome. They got all hippy and sing about Africa and rainforests... J effing C Jared Leto, sing about something you actually know about!!!!

Also, having seen them LIVE, the guy runs around and speaks to the audience SO much, that he does not actually sing the songs and it ends up sounding kak.

I WAS a huge fan.... :(

Where's the option for, "Both parties are equally idiotic"?

Pretty arrogant request from the band, but anyone who follows through only has themselves to blame.
