30 vs 60 fps

So I thought why not start a thread on 30fps vs 60fps since there are obviously not enough arguments over this on the interwebz "whistling:

Look I'm quite the VisualPhile for example I finally got round to playing dragon age 2 but have spent hours and hours on playing with the graphics to balance it out best view with best fps, so I started wondering can I actually tell the difference when my frames are bouncing around between 50-60 vs 35-50 or is it just my mind playing tricks on me.

What do you guys generally think about this, is anything more than 30fps needed to enjoy a game does it really make it more fluid playing at a higher frame rate or just make it feel weird, I noticed dark souls for instance feels wrong at 60fps I had to put it back to 30fps

Our eyes can only see 30frames per second but it's no consistent so you tend to notice lower FPS in games and videos, the higher the FPS is the less noticeable it becomes which is why most people aim for 60fps.

30fps is only desirable in games with fast character movements like God of War or Devil may cry since they don't really favor fluid movements.

Did you check the links of the first two posts at all? I can clearly see the difference between 30 and 60fps.

In online fps games, lower frame rates put you at a disadvantage. Also they say you don't notice a difference above 60fps but there is a noticeable difference when playing certain games at 60fps vs 120fps.

I thought we had this argument already and agreed based on scientific evidence that we can see more than 30fps and 60fps is indeed noticeable over 30fps.

i can't take what you say seriously when you have a LoTR name & Quote and then have a Game of Thrones Avatar...........o_O

:P

I'm of the opinion that you can't tell the difference, but it is noticeable because if your card can only do 35 fps on a good situation, it won't be able to maintain a steady rate above 25 or 30 that you need for it to remain unnoticed.

We are talking about how many FPS your brain can read even if something stays at 30fps capped.Check the link Pooky posted on the first page and scroll down.

That link is exactly the type of thing I was looking for. There's no arguing with hard facts, unless you're blind. :p

They did a test with a fighter pilot where he could see more than 200fps. They did this by changing the color of one of the blocks in one of the frames. Some clips had it, others didn't.

Of course it would depend on someone's concentration levels. People seem to be able adapt to speed and be able to take in more of the world. The only example I can give is when going from 120km to 60k after spending a considerate amount of time at 120km. Everything seems so slow (or smooth) then.

You can clearly 'feel' the difference between 30 and 60 fps.
You can 'frame lock' fps with certain GPU's. I have tried it and games feel far far smoother at 60 than on 30.
No drops etc, fps stays exactly 30 or 60 at all times.

For 3rd person shooters etc 30 is fine, but for first person shooters you want as close to 60 as you can get (or higher)
