3D Capable LCD monitors - Why does South Africa not have them?

So I've noticed this recently a lot, paying more and more attention on the whole "3D scene" of gaming. It would seem that we in South Africa are being left in the stone-age with this technology and I simply cannot figure out why this is happening!

We have the graphics card hardware in South Africa like any of the other leading countries. We have the latest game releases almost exactly when countries like the USA have and we even get Blu-Ray movies in more-or-less the same time frame everyone else gets theirs.

So why is it that you simply CANNOT find 3D capable LCD monitors in South Africa? You also cannot get the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses locally either, so you have to import that too.

Samsung has 22" 3D capable LCD Monitors and so does Acer, Viewsonic and Alienware. I suppose we don't have Alienware THAT prominently in South Africa, but what about Samsung and Acer? They FLOOD our LCD market but they seem to keep their "3D Capable" monitors very far away from our country.

Can anyone please explain to me WHY we are being left to play 2D games when other countries have been enjoying proper 3D gaming for more than a year?!?!?

These screens will probably be in the country at the end of the year - round about September. One of the reasons lcds prices are going down.

I don't see why that would cause us NOT to have them. In this country we're pretty use to getting new products even though they cost a premium. Besides, like I've said, gamers in the US, UK and even Australia have had these 3D capable monitors available at retails outlets for more than a year already.

Heck, I can use Amazon to import a 22" Samsung 3D capable LCD to this country for R5200.

That doesn't answer the question on why 3D technology is being hidden away from us in South Africa. Are the afraid to offer us the same products for some crazy reason?

Yeah I am also very upset that we are being left in the dark about this. Especially since I heard today that we will be broadcasting 3D from South Africa for the world cup. So the lucky viewers in the US and EU, etc will get 3D FIFA, and I am feeling very doubtful that we will get the same thing here - the location we are broadcasting from!

I been trying for ages to get my hands on a Acer 24" 3D monitor locally the suplliers just say that its not available here. As For the TV's I believe sony releasing them around june and samsung and the rest about september.

Frankly, there is very little demand for 3d-capable monitors. Only high-end users will really have the hardware to support the monitors, and the deep pockets to be able to afford them. Since there isn't that much demand, it doesn't make sense for the distributors to import them. You can probably get the monitors through have2have if you really want one...

i read in the beeld yesterday (or the day before?) that sumsung is bring out the 3d lcds this month, it will be a bundle with a 3d "dvd/blueray" player and 2 sets of 3d glasses...

..they say the glasses alone cost r1,000 a piece

Ugh don't get me started on those Samsung morons. I bought my 63" Plasma for an arm and a leg and it was supposed to be "3D ready". Turns out, it's not even remotely 3D ready. Not in the least!

I don't trust Samsung products anymore because they're misleading the customers with false advertising. Rather sticking with Sony from now on.

Are you sure it was the samsung oukes, or the sales staff? Cause those bunch of people tell you anything for a sale. I always refer to the net and official website to check the proper specs of a product before purchase. AFAIK i think the 3D monitors are currently on LED & LCD displays only , i am open to correction on this.

maybe if someone brought a consignment down and sold some just to see if theres a market for 3d lcd's

There is probably a market for it, it just seems that the market is so small that no1 deems it fit to bring it down. So when 3D takes the seen in June/July this year we should start seeing more of these monitors in SA.

I don't think it's feasible in this country yet ....I mean most people don't even have a lcd monitor and are sitting with an old tv set cause they don't have any HD source. What will motivate them to go out and buy a 3D which is going to be pretty pricey?

It's very expensive to import bulky items like screens, so it makes no sense for the established distributors to import small quantities :(

Okay so I see wantitall.co.za sells the Acer 23.6" 3D LCD for just under R5000. That's a very steep price, but considering what it offers you it's not that bad. I should at least get my Nvidia 3D Vision glasses this week. I bought them for less than R2000 off bidorbuy.co.za, that's R1200 less than what it would have cost me to import them myself. So those will be stored in my closet until I can get a really nice 3D Monitor.

Cool bananas. I got my glasses today. Now I'm waiting for the 27" Asus LCD monitor being released later this year (June apparently) and then I'll probably have to import that as well:

Yeah, Frontosa sent me a mail as well regarding these Zalman monitors. Bit small and pricey though. Does include 2 "stylish" pair of glasses though.

I'm registered with Frontosa as well, but didn't get an e-mail about the product yet. This is a bit of a different 3D solution where the actual monitor does the work. With the Nvidia solution it's the glasses that do the work and apparently it's considered to be the most effective 3D solution so far out of everyone's ideas. That's why Samsung's new 3D monitors work on the same principle. Active shutter glasses with an IR transmitter in the monitor itself.

I would really like to wait for the 27" Asus monitor, but it's going to be pricey and the Acer just seems a bit more "affordable" and available NOW.

I took the plunge and ordered the Acer 23.6" 3D LCD monitor. From what I've read online this is definitely one of the best 3D LCD's you get at the moment. I had a feeling the asus 27" was going to be nice and big, but too expensive.

Now all I have to do is wait 7-15 working days and I'll be gaming in 3D :D
