3D Goggles - Are they worth it or not?

Now I'm not talking about a simple set of 3D glasses to go with a 3D monitor like for Nvidia's 3D bundle, but rather a fully immersive 3D headset almost. One where it detects your head motion and adjusts your view accordingly (using Wii style hardware, etc).

Now at first you'd think "Heck Yeah it is!", but I wonder if it might not cause more trouble than it's worth? First it'll be incredibly expensive to start, second it'll probably be very bulky and, thirdly what are the chances that you end up forking out for this awesome system and then realising that it gives you motion sickness?

Wrap 1200VR

W
orth it?
I would say yes, but that's an individual opinion.

Also, Sony has just released their new iteration of the headgear in Japan a few weeks ago. Worldwide release unknown.
But more or less the same specs as the Wrap 1200VR.

Chances of motion sickness in this particular type of 3D environment is none. The reason that "conventional" 3D as you now know it causes sickness if because of the way in which it operates. Basically it flickers the alternating images on and off for each alternating eye.
These headsets offer true stereoscopic "natural" 3D. There is no flickering. The separate images are relayed by the separate screen to the separate eyes.

Lots of money? Yeah, sure, its still on the pricey side.
Bulky? Sony's headgear yes. Wrap 1200VR? No. Depends on what you're buying.

Do some research. Either way, the Wrap 1200VR is an excellent product, and the best quality for money you will find before entering the 10's-of-thousands-of-dollars-minimal-models.

It depends, with Nvidia releasing version 2 of their 3D vision set soon and some other companies going the next step... I would rather wait a couple of months and see what happens.

Not sure if I would spend that much money without testing it myself. I haven't see a place that sells them in SA, so will have to order from over seas.

Takealot.co.za (The old take2.co.za) has a item request feature, which includes imports.
Thus far, I am very happy with their pricing around this feature as well.
Might take a couple of days for them to properly source and price it, but all said and done, excellent overall service.

I would understand the need for testing, but in this case you would be shit out of luck.
Nowhere in SA will you find a demo setup of this, or the Sony headgear for that matter, for you to "test".

Importing goods is what it is. You just have to be a little more careful and do some deeper research.
On this particular products, I have actually done exactly that.
It is an excellent product.
The only part of it that might "fail" you, is false expectations and gimmick value. There have been millions of awesome devices on the market in the history of computing. All of them excellent products. But a very large portion of those items are brought by people who stop using them after a week.

These headsets, glasses, and alike products very easily fall into that category of products.

All said though - the Wrap 1200VR is an excellent product. Buy it for the right reasons, and you will not be disappointed.
The Sony headgear, with almost identical specs, should be available worldwide some time early 2012, will carry the same sort of pricetag, and be more bulkier to use...

If you got the money lying about, that sounds pretty epic. Please look into it and then invite everyone from the forums to come try it out! :D
