According to the article from andriasang, paid DLC is heading to the 3DS with the new Fire Emblem series (title unknown at this point in time) title, slated for a March 2012 release. Here is an extract from the article that should shed some light on the matter:

According to the Nikkei report, players will be able to use either prepaid cards or credit card to make purchases. The 3DS firmware was already updated for billing functionality earlier this month.

Third party publishers are also making preparations for paid download content to begin rolling out starting summer 2012.

Nikkei aslo reports that Nintendo is planning on including similar paid download content functionality in the Wii U, which is due for release in 2012.

This will surely make many 3DS users quite happy, as it will extend the playability of their favourite titles on the handheld console. As mentioned in the excerpt above, the firmware update from earlier this month included the functionality to make micro-transactions. It seems that after a year on the market, the 3DS will finally start growing into the handheld that Nintendo fans wanted it to be. It is also mentioned that the Wii-U will also be making use of the micro-transaction system to get paid DLC to the users.

Another interesting point from the article is that the Nintendo Direct Broadcast, led by Mr. Iwata himself will take place tomorrow (will be a recording that was filmed on the 19th). In this broadcast, Nintendo will be laying out their plans for 2012. If you are keen to hear what will the future holds for the 3DS and the Wii-U, be sure to check out Ustream at 05:00am SAST tomorrow morning (27th).

EDIT: I am unsure about the language of the broadcast. If it turns out to be Japanese, just wait until after the broadcast and check out andriasang's website, which should have dissected the entire event into more readable chunks.
