3G during power outage

Do cellphone towers have backup power during power outages?
I have Afrihost Mobile (MTN) and when they tried stealing the power cables last night (again), I could "connect" to 3G, but could not do anything on the internet. I basically had to make my cellphone on Vodacom a Wifi hotspot and use the internet through that.

Internet via Afrihost Mobile is never great in my house but last night it was just plain useless. Anyone know if MTN 3G becomes unavailable during a power outage or is there anything I can do to improve my reception?

I use Afrihost Mobile as my main internet. Unfortunately when the power goes out my pc goes out with it so I have no idea whether it still works.

Dont you have a smartphone? When I get a good signal which is never usually it works when there is a power outage.

I suspect in my case it is just bad Afrihost / MTN reception in my house. I just checked now and I'm just getting GPRS, although, at least I'm getting a signal. Last night during the power outage I got "signal", but couldn't do anything with it. Think I should perhaps cancel and go back to Vodacom.
I only notice the bad 3G when my internet goes out for some reason cause I'm only using it for backup.

I'm usually still able to browse the net, even with power outages.

Also, I changed to VodaCom 3G yesterday to find -- in this region, it's more consistent and stable than MTN; especially so in late at night. This is a rural area, however, making activity far less.

Yeah my smartphone works but I've got a Vodacom sim in there. But you are right. I mean if Vodacom works then MTN should work too.

It sucks that you don't have proper Afrihost/MTN connection there by you ViperGTI. It's just so much cheaper than Vodacom. Have you tried Telkom Mobile?

I can't remember. Think I also had some issues but they came out to do some tests to try and improve it a bit. Shortly after that I gave it off to one of the other employees who needed 3G since I only use it as backup. I also prefer Afrihost though even if just for the ease to manage the bandwidth, topup, etc.

Whats funny with my bad signal is that a MTN and Vodacom tower are under 1 km away from my house so not sure why both are terrible here.
