Hi guys, so like i know there are alot of people out there that are thinking of using 3g network for online gaming. Just want to let you know it is possible as i do it with cellc and get ping of 216 - 240 with LoL (League of Legends EUW server). Any question are welcome and any additions from guys using other networks are much appreciated. I just want to let people know that there is an alternative from having an adsl connection for online gaming.

I think many people on this forum already use 3G networks to game. I myself use 8ta to game on and I get a pretty decent connection for gaming (I don't have the stats to back that up right now, not at home at the moment).

Ja I know a lot of people who game using 3G. They all seem to be able to handle themselves Its obviously not as stable as adsl but they all manage.

I use 8ta for my gaming and rarely had problems with it. I don't think gaming on 3G is as rare as you think...

I tried the Afrihost MiFi device and their mobile data which uses an MTN sim. The speeds were really good, no real spikes or drops.

Took the device with to Pretoria near TUT where the performance wasn't as good as it was in Fourways but still very manageable.

I use Vodacom for 3G and play BF3 (mostly) on xbox...without any lagging, the real problems only come with thunderstorms, otherwise it's pretty decent and solid as it doesn't drop(downloads overnight have never failed)

I will never go back to 3G for gaming i used to have 8ta and at first it was ok unless fo course it was storming or very cloudy then not so ok and after a few months it just became ridiculousness i now have a adsl line and will never look back

oh ok what area you live in cause I was thinking of using 8ta because of their data deals but I heard bad things about quality and reliability. I myself live in randburg and the connection is pretty much the same even during thunderstorms or cloudy days

I'm in Pretoria East. Never have an issue with them. Randburg should be fine though.

I played on MTN, Cell C, and finally, 8ta, but the horrible pings, and data cost involved (I didn't just use the connection for gaming, I used it for everything else - pr0n included), made me switch to uncapped ADSL. Never looked back!

The download speeds on HSPA were far superior to ADSL, however - the only thing I miss.

Whenever my adsl gives me issues I jam GW2 etc. on my Afrihost mifi. roughly 2mbps connection here at the coast, but it does the job and the price is NICE!

With only 2gb per month on Cell C, I would rather not play online, I used to have one of the very 1st installations of Telkom's WIFI in JHB and that was horrible as well, wireless just does not work when it comes to FPS....

I rem playing COD world at war, shooting some one only to find them spawn and standing right next to me at the same time...talk about ping delay...hahahaha

As for Unreal Tournament, don't even get me started..

Applied last week Monday for Uncapped with Cybersmart, don't have the words to express just how excited I am

Received my Afrihost Mobile Sim today:

Haven't tried gaming yet though...

I'm looking at getting the Giga 200 (50 + 150 early hours) for next year from Cell C! Good to hear that it can be reliable for online gaming. Not a huge online gamer, but to have the option is nice!

I have to disagree. Cell C needs to sort out their network badly. If you limit yourself to playing during off peak hours and weekends (mainly Sundays), maybe, but any other time and you'll have issues. I personally am not optimistic about the situation with Cell C changing any time soon if at all. I bought that Giga 200 deal and for the past few months I haven't even been able to go online much during peak hours with it. It's seriously worse than dial-up. So in my opinion, avoid, unless you want it purely for the capacity -- to download stuff.

Hmm...And Telkom Mobile? They have that similar 60+60gb deal. Is their connection any good? (This is for the Bellville area in CT)

Telkom Mobile would likely be a better option. There is coverage in Bellville so you should be fine. Refer to their coverage map to be absolutely sure.

I haven't tested it yet seeing as there was no coverage where I live last year, and I had to take Cell C's prepaid packages as a sort of plan B. But now there is coverage here, so I will very likely be switching to Telkom Mobile.

Cool! Will definitely have a look at both of them! Can you guys recommend a dongle/router? Not really sure how that works or if it makes much of a difference between them.
