43" plasma / 32" LED

Good day y'all! :D

As the title says I can either get a 43" plasma hd ready or a 32" Led full hd.

It'll be mostly used for xbox/ps3 gaming blu ray and some tv.

Which one would you get?

Hmm tough choice - size or quality. I'd go for the bigger plasma or if possible try get a 40'' LCD, I have a friend who's got a 32'' LED and plays PS3 on it and he'd gladly go for a bigger TV (even if it isn't LCD).

Depends on how far you sit from your screen.
I would say 1-3 meters, LED, 3 meters or further, the plasma. (just my 2c)

The issue with plasma screens is "Image Burn"
Go do some reading, Plasma Displays are not suited for anything that displays a static image or portion of a static image unless the console or system being used to output that image has a plasma safe mode (Only Console currently supporting this is the Nintendo Wii)

With "Image Burn" you will notice a gradual burn of images to the display crystals until that specific area (Think Ammo Bar in FPS games) becomes permanently burned into the display

Yes, there are ways of limiting the amount of burn that is experienced by the diplay by either using a lowered contrast ration along with optimized brightness settings, or by using a plasma safe console as stated

Go for the LCD, you have no fear of permanent damage to your display

Newer plasmas actually suffer less burn in then they used to, you might get image retention but you can clear it.
Also look at a normal ccfl over an led backlit lcd tv, as you might find one that is larger, higher resolution and for the same price. LED edge lit lcds also have issues, they can suffer from light bleeding, uneven picture and judder.

True in regards of the newer plasma's, buuuut, I would rather bet on a safe display when spending a load of cash rather than taking a chance on being able to revert back from a burnt image

My buddy has been using his 2009 plasma for gaming and there has been no burn in, also checking on the mybroadband tv section a lot of people use there plasma for gaming.
They have really improved it, ir maybe a little of an issue but burn in about as much chance as on an lcd.

Also with electricity prices constantly on the rise a LED tv makes more sense, plasma requires more power.

Thanx for the input guys.

To be honest I'm leaning a bit more to size than quality at the moment.

@Lupus it's a samsung plasma and I think it's one of the newer models do you think I'll be safe, I don't usually game for more than an hour or so?

@Saiyan try Metro Lifestyle centre, their prices are pretty decent.

If you don't mind that it uses twice the power of the LED and about 40 watts more then an equivalent LCD then yes it will be fine, if it's the PS43D430/490 there isn't a problem especially if you follow the guidelines in the beginning, keep the brightness and contrast down, if you do get a little image retention use the pixel sweeper to clear it.
The main thing is the LED at that price is not worth it, you could also look at the Samsung LA40D550 it's around R5000 at most shops now, and I've got it's bigger brother the 46" which is a pretty decent TV.

Don't pay electricity, so I don't mind at all! :D

Shot thanks, will keep an eye out for it.

i would get the 32" LED, i believe it would be better, i know these days the difference between plasma and lcd are much of the muchness, but i just believe LED is the best

LED is LCD just with a different backlighting tech, the only difference is that a normal LCD is using CCFL backlight where the LED is using a strip around the edges. It's not actually the best yet as there are teething problems, uneven picture etc... Give it time and wait for the price to actually drop where it should as right now it's overly priced as people will go it's newer it must be better and fork out the cash.

Well the one is HD ready and the other is full HD. The full HD will most of the time take preference. They probably trying to get rid of the plasma HD ready screens that's why the price came down

Plasma burn in is a thing of the past. The older gen plasamas yes, they suffered from burn in if static images were let on screen for to long.

I have a 50" plasma and I use it for Xbox and PS3 and have never had an issue.

Image retention is however a reality. You will get this. This is the nature of the technology but not a flaw or an issue. Images left on the screen for a long period will still appear there after changing channels. It goes away after about 5 minutes. Don't mix this is up with image burn in, that is permanent but unlikely.
