Of the more than 15 million individuals registered on the SA Revenue Service's personal income tax register, just over six million paid into the fiscus, Sars said on Monday.

Briefing the media in Cape Town at the launch of the 2013 Tax Statistics document, Sars head of revenue analysis Randall Carolissen said there were 15.4m individuals registered in the 2012/13 fiscal year.

Ah, I guess I should get around to doing that sometime. It's not like it's difficult. efiling is a very good system.

Pretty sure its well over 50 million at the moment.

Gauteng is also getting screwed over....apparently providing 40% of the funds but getting 10% of the budget. The stats are all over the place though. e.g. on the radio today GP was listed as 46%...and for the 10% I can't find anything solid at all.
 
I wonder when the ANC or EFF or one of those -- i like to make charts -- parties will give us a pie chart or something that shows us how those 2 amounts of people break down into color. They love to use the color card.

Yup, i've read over 55million...being paid for by 6million of us. Its just ridiculous.
 
The total currently in South Africa is app. 80 million. So that means we have app. 25 million foreigners - 8 million of those are from Zim alone (the last time stats were released), who send home over R1 billion every year. How many of those would you say pay tax?

Well I'm assuming that most of these guys who come over aren't getting big executive salaries and are likely at the bottom of the barrel. That's a fair assumption right, then since they aren't local their salaries aren't as high as normal workers since they get less benefits. Taking that into account I'm fairly certain most if not all of Zimbabwe's labours in SA are below the tax threshold so I'm going to say their tax is up to date since there is none. However this is after assuming our immigrant friends earn less than R5300 a month after tax deductions.

So as you are writing your tax exam soon you know the facts. The challenge is how do we grow the base, one of which is creating employment.

The country needs to look to young folk like you to come up with some new ideas ;)

Not really. The 'rest' would make the government that stuff their pockets with our cash. The country barely gets benefit.

Agreed, but they still use our facilities and infrastructure that WE have to pay for. And yeah, the governmunt steal most of it, I'm sure.

Not entirely true. The 6 million of us pay tax ( PAYE) because we earn above a certain level. Many other taxes such as VAT etc, we are all petty much exposed to.
