9800gt, ram are dead

Hello gamers,

So as you may have already gleaned from the topic description, my 9800gt is no longer in the best condition. The ram has become faulty, probably my fault for handling it without taking anti-static precautions, but that's neither here nor there.

The thing I want to know from any tech-gurus in the house (self-proclaimed or otherwise) is: Can I pay an IT technician to replace the ram chips on the graphics card itself? Would it cost more than its worth?

P.S. if you're interested, I used this program to check the video ram: http://majorgeeks.co...est__d5896.html

get a new card! why would you want to spend money on something thats, that old anyway. GTX460 comes to mind. Your computer is trying to tell you its time for a new gfx card. R1999 for the GTX460.

I agree with Frank. It's way too much effort. New cards will give you Direct X 11 as well.

If you have extra RAM chips i can always try to replace them for you ... but you must make sure that the RAM IC's you want to replace it with is exactly the same pin outs as the originals

Still people that can do this out there :) , thought only robots can do it now days.

Yeah ... i can do it ... i work for a company that builds electronic boards ... we must be able to to fix the broken ones ... so YEAH ... we can do it ...

We actually use the same RAM they use on Graphic Card on one of our boards.

I totally agree with you ... but i can help ... that is all I said ... most of the time it not just the RAM chips that go anyway ... and success rate on replacing IC's is also low ... machiens can do it alot beter than me :P

Jees, I just wanted to know if it was possible. Thanks for the input, gents.
I'm saving up for an HD 5850. Do you think that the introduction of the 6000 series will bring about a decrease in the 5000 series pricing?

maybe, maybe not. will have to wait and see

still can't go wrong with a 5850. good solid card

Rather get a GTX460 1gb. Its on par with the performance of the 5850 sometimes even better. Its also only R2000 for better performance!

Thankfully i'll only have to decide in October, Frank. But as far as I can tell, if the prices become anywhere near comparable, I'll go with the ATI option (especially if it has one of Sapphire's kiff little Vapor-X coolers attached).

IN the dx11 games it does not do as well but in the dx10 games it rapes. Sometimes even better than the GTX465. I am talking about the 1gb version though! I cant wait till i get mine. SLI will work the charm!
