A bit of Help with my new GPU

Hi guys..

First time making a thread on this forum, so HI :)

I bought a Point of View NVidia 550GTX Ti to replace a Gigabyte 8600GT. I put it in the exact same pci port that my 8600gt was in and plugged in the 6 pin power cable.. When i connect my screen to it (dvi) and start up the pc, it gets stuck at the Intel splash screen where it says press f2 for bios. Even if I press F2 nothing happens.. It sorta hangs :/

Not sure what to do, my first time doing a hardware upgrade like this.. Could you guys suggest anything? Any help will be appreciated, thanks :)

BTW, if i put my 8600gt back in it works as normal.

CPU: Intel Core 2 quad @ 2.4Ghz Q6600
RAM: 4GB ( 4 x 1GB) DDRII 667
HDD: Seagate 500gb
PSU: cant remember exactly but i think its a 450/500w psu. (Not at home to check)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32Bit
MOBO: Intel DQ35JO
GPU: 8600GT (trying to get the 550GTX to work)

Thanks

Quick question. The 8600GT, is that powered by the mobo or does it take a 6 pin from the psu?

I'm pretty sure it's powered by the mobo. I can't think of a 8600 that actually used a 6pin connection back then. Might be wrong though, and you are wiser about these things then I am.

Yeah I can't remember either xD Getting old now xD

If it doesn't use a 6 Pin then the culprit is most likely the psu.

Takes power from mobo.. A few places on the net say i should try disabling onboard graphics before install new gpu.. Need to try that when I get home

Yip try that, if it still does that, try get a mate to let you test the card in his rig.

Ja would say the same thing.

But it does show something which is strange. Do you know anyone else who you can test the card in their pc.

My engrish is bad cause i am dead tired from deadmau5

The Minimum for that graphics card is 400 watts system power...any additionsl fans? Board might need bios update (shot in the dark)?

400 / 450W is a bit on the low side. I would recommend something above 500W. Try a BIOS update on your motherboard, and disable on-board GPU if you haven't already. You could also try "Load bios defaults" and see if that boots.

I installed my 8600gt again, entered bios looking for an option to disable onboard graphics, All i found was an option to set the primary video adapter as the pci-e slot. Tried with the 550gtx again and still no luck :(

And i checked, my psu is 500w.. Really stuck now.. don't know what to do. :(

It couldn't be my mobo right? (Intel DQ35JO). It has got one 16x PCI-E slot.
And my PSU is sufficient (500w - 400w required).

Last resort send the card back. Tell them to test it. I'm taking a wild guess here but I think it might be a dead card.
Try updating you're bios to the latest available version, and then test the card again. I have heard of the 5 series cards giving issues with older chipsets.

Is it safe to upgrade BIOS? I'm a bit uncertain with flashing etc. Would this be the correct one?

Yip its the right one.
Just click this link and agree to the terms ect and download it.

Yoh I'm back, scarey experience.

I started up the .exe install. System rebooted. PC was on but nothing on the screen. I saw the setup saying that I shouldn't restart no matter what.. So im sitting with a blank display for about 15 minutes.. Took out my iPod and Googled how long it should take. Apparently 3 minutes is the max time it should take.. I got scared and restarted. Logged in to Win7 and it said that the BIOS update was successful.. Not too sure about that though. Going to restart now and check BIOS version number.

lol if it says the bios update was successful then I am sure it was :)
Run you're gpu now and let us know if it still has the same issue.

Btw where are you based dude? Might be able to test the card for you.
