A look at gaming mouses - separating the features from the fluff

I also never saw the point of gaming mice until I tried them. Razer make some good tech and I have never looked back.

I had a Rat 9 to test for a week. It's absolutely horrible to use for fast paced FPS games. While playing it might seem all fine and dandy, till you get into some tight spots and you can clearly notice tracking issues. There is also some annoying "acceleration" applied when moving fast from corner to corner.

The mouse itself is fantastic though, epic comfy and all, I love the customization, pinky grip especially, but the wireless interface is just not made for gaming. As an example, I had the wired version to test as well (RAT 7 ), both used on 5 different mousepads. The wired version felt much more precise in games, much more responsive and didn't feel like it had any 'acceleration". Again it's not something you would outright notice, but I even had my friend play on both and he did much better using the wired Rat7 as the wireless "compensation / acceleration" does actually cost you kills and accuracy.

Still have my MX518.. had it for 5 years or more now.. but recently replaced it with a Kone+ not bad mouse at all !

Had a logitech MX518 for years until it just got so worn down and had issues clicking. (yes some heavy usage)
Got myself a Razer mouse after not being able to find another MX518 but I stopped using after 2 months it was just horrid, most uncomfortable mouse I've ever owned and it eventually just died after having it connected to a 2nd PC.
Went back to the tried and trusted Logitech and got a G5, loved it so much I bought a 2nd one for when the time arises since I didn't want the same situation I was in with the MX518.

So I has a backup G5 for when Diablo 3 ships :D (u know it's gona destroy your mouse!)

Simple reason why I want one is because my ms oem mouse running now for god knows how long is at it's end. I've declare it's time for a decent gaming mouse hence getting the rat7.

working some of the actions my left hand has to cover over to my mouse would be nice imho.

Thats true I find my left hand does get tired here a lot compared to my right hand when playing and I guess the gaming mouse gives you faster reaction times with one less hand to think about.

I use the extra buttons as shortcuts for programmes i frequently uses on my PC. i have to agree with the writer of the article though...you do get used to your mouse after a while so its just a case of how picky you really are or how unique you want to be.

Oh ok never thought about using the gaming mouse as a shortcut for programs

My G9x was a good 'investment'. If looked elsewhere, it would possibly be to the mouse by Gigabyte (I think :o). Plenty have spoken well of it.

Wireless is something that I waited years for, I finally got me a MS Sidewinder X8, best buy ever.

The mouse is responsive, there is no lag even if it's been standing still for hours it will pick up the slightest movements. The best part is that if the battery goes flat you plug in the charge cable and keep playing.

My first gaming mouse was a Logitech 500 which lasted me years. After that I bought a MX518 and still have it. Probably had it for about 5 years now.

Will never switch to another mouse. I tried some other mouses at work, meh. I wub my 518.

Dis gewoonlik wat gebeur wanneer jou hand op die ander muis is ;)

I don't really understand why everyone hates wireless "mice" so much. I've been looking for a gaming mouse with some programmable side buttons, but I would really like it to be wireless. My PC case is usually of the floor and I find the cable really restricting. It's almost never long enough. As for the batteries, buy a rechargeable set of 4 from Diskem for like R100. Most mice these days have pretty low power useage.

Can anyone recommend a decent wireless gaming mouse. I'm totally not a pro, it must just have some side buttons and a decent dpi!

got a coolermaster sentinel storm, it isnt good at all... regret buyin it

Shame dude, I was just looking at that on Kalahari. It looks epic!

Please give advice regarding this one.

Roccat Pyra Gaming mouse wireless

It's about in the price I'm willing to spend. I also would prefer wireless.

Yeah that's the mouse I've been looking at

Good article. I agree with the braided cable part. A mouse that I really loved (Microsoft Habu) stopped working after a couple of years because of the cable.

If I had to buy a new mouse now it will be something small with easy to click side buttons. I'm one of the few people who don't like the MX518. It's ideal for people with a palm grip but I find it very uncomfortable using a fingertip grip.

You won't be disappointed, the x8 can be had for pretty cheap these days, the side buttons are awesome (as long as you are right handed) and the shape is what I also like because I have slightly larger hands so it fits nicely

Nah man. I'm a fingertipper with some palm mixed in and my MX518 is perfect for me. I don't game that much though. Only when I have time... Maybe 4-6 hours a week... but I'm almost always at my pc and it is perfect for me. Will only get another mouse when this one kicks the bucket, and I don't see that happening anytime soon.

*Touches wood*

*continues to rub wood just incase*

*realises how that might sound a little off colour to some*

*Decides he doesn't care and give wood a little lick for good measure*
