Advice please, looking for a new Freelancer

I just started watching the firefly series again and its woken up the space fighter/trader in me. Problem is I can’t find the right game, basically I’m looking for something like Freelancer, but newer with better graphics, a bigger galaxy and well something that will blow my mind away.

I’ve tried X3, but didn’t dig it too much, the fighting was a bit boring and the learning curve was way too high, I don’t have as much time to dedicate to gaming as I like so I need something I can jump in and be good at within a few hours.

I’ve tried Eve Online, but that didn’t cut it either, I want my space battles to be intense 1st/3rd person action.

So the closest I’ve found to what I want is freelancer, but I’d really like a “newer” version. So does anyone have a suggestion?
 
As Ozerc0n said, darkstar one is pretty close to freelancer, though the gameplay felt a little lacking in compaison in my oppinion. But if graphics is a lesser consern, an older game worth looking at is Tachyon: The Fringe.
 
The Discovery mod fro freelancer is quite cool, ups the graphics a bit, fixes the original problems
 
thanks, I'll see if I can get hold of Darkstar one and that Discovery mod for freelancer. I also found another game this afternoon that looks like its going to be epic, Jumpgate Evolution http://eu.jumpgateevolution.com/?territory=EnglishUK

It looks like a Freelancer mmo, which I think would be insane. Signed up for closed and open beta, so will have to wait and see.

Hmmm, I read somewhere that some oke managed to get a workaround for freelancer servers, so now you can host your own.
 
WE started Lanning Freelancer at the office a couple of days ago. Discovery mod is really awesome, the new one adds tons of features. If you are looking for something with updated graphics, try the Crossfire mod, It's huge but its rocking. Weighs in at about 1.3 gigs, which is huge considdering even the discovery mod which adds so much to the game is a mere 100MB zipped, but it's well worth it hey. And it's rather new aswell, it was released 25 Jan 2010.

Freelancer was legend back when it came out. I remember how absorbed I got into the game and it's story. It was a really fantastic space opera and to this day I still await a sequel or spiritual successor.

I've tried X3 and Darkstar One but neither caught my attention in the same way.
 
Freelancer, in the end, is the single best space sim ever to grace humanity. And Crossfire mod is awesome. Need do download it again sometime.
 
Haven't played it in a while - the question is: does anyone know where you can still buy it, locally? I've taken a look at my usual suspects (Zaps & Take 2), none of them have it available :(
